  • Bodybuilding to Powerlifting

Has anyone tried this? Two guys at my gym are trying to get me to train for a meet in November. I think changing my routine up would be good for me but I have always had the attitude that if I'm going to do it I have to have a chance at winning. I can't just compete for fun. Sorry, I know a lot of people that can but not me. So I think I'm going to start training for it and see how my lifts go. I would enter the raw division (no equipment except a belt). It's crazy how much weight a bench shirt and squat/dead suits can add to your lifts. I just went to a meet a couple weeks back and some of the girls (using equipment) were out benching and squatting the raw guy lifters. Now these girls didn't look like girls. :D But man that has to be hard on the ego!!

I have been encouraged to enter a power lifting comp also so I started looking into the combined weights that were winning in the league for lack of a better term( I don't know the jargon) and I found that I was repping as much as some of the folks that were placing. But I don't do a strictly bb workout either. The results for the local comps around here were posted on the net so I was able to do the research and it encouraged me. SO I think it could be a real ego boost. Not sure if that helps hope it does. right now I am trying to go down a weight class and maintain the strength.

a bunch or people in my gym do it. go back and forth each year. i dont think much of it personally. i think it ruins the bodybuilding side of it. guys have wider waist/obliques then they used to in the same exact condition. few of them have tears now etc..

jonny jackson would be a much better bodybuilder if he would cut the power lifting stuff.

i respect each sport but i think it should be one or the other. not flip flop back and forth.

Not really looking to turn into a powerlifter just looking to maybe compete one time. Think it would be fun to change up the training for a couple months too.

Yea the strength training has really made me a lot bigger in the obliques. I like the muscle but if you don't know what it is it looks kinda strange.

I say that if you're going to do it then go raw - it'll keep you from getting into the area B is talking about with ruining your physique...

I've been hounded by a guy promoting a show in October to compete as well but I have some injuries I'm trying to let heal before I give it a go - like you I can't enter something without at least the *idea* of winning or at least knowing I'm entering it to win even if I don't have a chance....

I did win a bench press contest at my university a few months back though - it was a great feeling seeing that all I had to do was outlift everyone else - none of that 20 week diet stuff - I just walked in with barely even a warmup and beat the pants off everyone and was still shy of what could have been a max for me :P

              What do you mean here?

Do you mean that with the deadlifting and deep squat the waist thickens? or just that they're out of shape?
