  • Treadmill Vs Outside.. also additional questions?

Sorry if this is a newb question but this is the first time in my life that im trying to actually lose weight instead of gain

I started running again this week in my quest to lose about about 20lbs... Ive run about 4 miles according to the treadmill at about 4.2mph

Now i hear people telling me running on a treadmill is not the same as running outside for 4 miles? Like running on a treadmill for 4 miles is like running outside for 2 miles or something like that....

Now i know outside theres going to be elevation changes but is it really that different? So far i prefer the treadmill instead of outside.

    Another separate question:

Ive development some mass from a previous cycle and i dont want to burn my muscle up just trying to lose weight... is there a way i can hold on to as much muscle as i can and burn up the fat?

Again sorry if these are newb questions but hey its the only way we learn!

I've heard you should always run with at least a 1.0 incline on the treadmill, to help compensate for the elevation outside - but 50% difference seems a little drastic??

first question = false. same thing.

second question that also pertains to the first question. dont run. do cardio low intensity long duration to burn fat. running = fat and muscle breakdown.

cardio should be 30-45 min at walking speed.

as usual bouncer is wrong :D . if you are training to run for an outdoor event and did it all on a treadmill and then went to run outside you would not be trained for it. plain and simple. and thats no theory, I have seen it and heard it with my own eyes.

when i speak it is in bodybuilding terms only. when i answer the question i am speaking of fat burning effect and how it makes you look. not about some god damn ironman event or some shit.

why would it not be "different" if running on real road is HARDER than treadmill...wouldn't you then assume more caloric burn on the harder action?

you talk in circles. i love ya bro but you do.

sure if the road has more of an incline you will burn more calories. BUT the road could also be on a slight decline and in that case the treadmill would yield better results etc.. you could also put the treadmill on a 10 incline and blah blah..

                no argument here.

I am completely with SC on this one. Tons of studies have been done. Running on a treadmill does not have near the resistance as running on a stationary surface, there for requiring more energy to cover the same distance. On a treadmill you are moving your legs underneath you where on the ground you are pushing yourself forward with each step. Remember as a kid when you went down the escalator the wrong way and when you got to the end your feet suddenly felt like they stepped in glue...

i see what your saying and it makes sense.

but in terms of fat burning 30-45 min on a treadmill on a slight incline gets the job done.
