  • GYM Time vs Number of Sets

I have been trying to limit my time in the gym to about 45 minutes to an hour because of just being too busy these days. However when the time is up sometimes I feel as though I have not completed enough sets.

What do you guys try to achieve in the gym:
1.) Do as much as you in a certain amount of time

2.) Stay in gym until you've completed a certain number of execises and sets.

you can get a lot done in 45mins. just shorten the amount of time between sets. dont bs with ppl. get your shit done. keep the intensity high ...

      what is your routine.

i can do one set of leg press and leave the gym and felt an accomplishment....if you can't get quality sets in, then it doesn't matter how much time you spend doing "lesser" sets in. focus on establishing a short rest in between sets gradually and having quality "muscle" driven sets (a good cadence)

Wear a wristwatch and religiously watch your time between sets. I never take more than 1 minute between sets. It is amazing how much time one can spend dawdling. I also work out alone - while this may have some disadvantages for spotting, etc., it cuts down enormously on the time spent.

very true...I use a finger watch by sportcount.com they are awesome cuz you can start and stop them by yourself for sets if you time your actual sets too.

What I have noticed from this site and from other people in the gym it is your own results you see equals the time needed in the gym. What I mean is all people need a different work routine. I kno some people who go for 45 mins and thats all they need, while my self, I need to be in the gym for longer or my muscle do not feel like they have been worked out.

while that is a nice political remark its not true....we as humans are not that far off from each other in the details of our systems.... not that a cookie cutter program exists for all of us but there are guideline e.g. a prescription to follow for the proper exercise program for us all.

not being able to have your muscle feel worked is an intensity problem. that or your muscular makeup is so slow twitch that there is no reason to work out.

                      false.

focus + intensity + strict form= gains. that can be done in 30 - 45 min or even less.

the time you spend in the gym does not make your muscles sore, it is what you are doing in that time period that makes your muscle sore.

I am almost always done lifting in 30 to 45 minutes. Even when I am doing German High Volume training which is like 10 sets of 10 for each major muscle group usually doing 2 groups per workout. 30 sec rest periods no talking. Then cardio

Thanks FB - Been awhile, between broken hand that did not heal too well, kids economy, etc. Trying to get back on track.

I understand that intensity level is important and that everyone is different. I was trying to figure out if a good goal is set a certain time and try and stick with it and get the most out of it and then move on too the next day.

I was also wondering if there is a negative affect on the body after a certain period of time.

I was also just curious about how everyone gages their workouts.

I have never timed myself for rest in between sets just tried to gage time on my own. I think I will try bringing in a watch and keeping myself on pace.

Not everyone will agree with this. I am a firm believer in a planned workout routine. That includes goals for reps, sets and weight. As well as logging your training as well as how you felt and other observations about the workout. I complete my workout planned for that day and that IMHO is the goal and allows you to set new goals and see your progress.

I have read several studies that indicate that once you go past 1 hour in the gym the returns are minimized. I have also read that over time the body can adapt to longer high intensity work outs .

Like I said above I get what I have planned completed and I write in my log how I felt about the workout or an exercise. Somedays I write felt great other days I write sucked ect. That way I can correlate what works and what doesn't

just one point to try and remember is that ANY training is a negative on your body....that is WHY you must minimize it. so to say is there a level you reach that it becomes negative, who knows....so they best way is to do what is NECESSARY and then get out of the gym.
