  • Discussion: can you focus more on arms in a useful way

I know that on bodybuilding forums "symmetry" is a value that is (rightfully) regarded as important. You could even get childish fight-picking reactions over starting a thread like this, so I hope that won't happen here. The topic of discussion is: can you make a specific bodypart relatively "bigger" than the rest by focusing your training more on this bodypart, and as an example I choose arms here. I know that compound exercices are regarded as the best way of training, but are they more important for arms than isolation work? And can you enhance your arm size more by spending a disproportionate amount of your time and energy on arm work?
Remember that this is just a discussion on the consequences of hypothetical ways of training, so nobody is waiting for any preaching in this thread.

In my opinion, isolation exercises are needed for optimal muscle growth. While you will stimulate your bis doing back, and tris doing chest/delts, I don't beleive they will deveop to their maximal potential.

That being said, it is possible to build one body part more than the others. Come to jersey and look around during the summer. Guys have built upper bodies, with little chicken legs.

Isolation exercises are well known to have a greater increase in Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. while compounds movements are more geared to Myfibrill hypertrophy.
By focusing on specific body parts you will get bigger.

Nekrawulf, from the research I just did, you are saying isolation exercises increase mass better than compound movements. But compound movements will increase strength more. Am I getting this right?

            Yes and no.

Compound movements are well known to have a greater anabolic endocrinic response , while isolation movements (particularly in the 8-12 rep scheme) tend to increase fascia vector size... causing these voids to be filled with sarcoplasmic fluid.

Isolation movements are used specifically to breack down fascia of specific muscles.
Coumpound are more effiecient at gaining strength, esp in the 1-5 rep scheme.

            Does this help?

Nice explanation. But, let me ask a follow up question. Why do all the BB say if you want big quads do heavy squats? Why wouldn't you want to isolate them to make them grow.

like he said. a mix. squats, then hit them more individually.

fun fact, Dorian Yates never squatted much at all.

Another aspect of the initial question would be: how much iso work is good for you? When are you probably going to be overtraining a muscle? (does this exist, or is overtraining something that only applies to your general state of being?)
