  • People who bench random-ass sets

    There are always people at my gym with whom I bench who seem to do a pretty random amount of sets (although maybe it's not that random to them). They start really light, like adding maybe tens after warming up with the bar, then they ramp up the weights in a few steps until their maximum potential, and then they do another few sets with decreasing weights. The thing is that these are usually the people who can bench more than I do.

    So I guess my question is: is this better than a strict 4 set routine?

      I also see people doing pyramid workouts at my gym not just on the bench whaat are the pro's an cons of this style of lifting vs. a set 8-12 reps pushing yourself

        pro's, safer as far as injuries because your in the habit of working the muscle through the sets with ascending weights and not tempted to go short on the warm up. Cons basically come from the fact that its less efficient use of energy in getting to the sets that actually stimulate growth and making those sets as effective as possible.

        Safe but not the best at stimulating growth in an intermediate lifter or advanced

          I thought pyramid was all about reducing the reps and increasing the weights.
