180 is really high...are you using a heart rate monitor or the handles on the machine? I can't imagine what keeping your heart rate at 180 must feel like...Mine hits 160s in my HIIT sprints and I can barely breath.

I remember a few times on the stairmaster i would push myself hard for 30min. About 20min in my workout, 192 beats per minute on the handle bar.

Now when i do the stairmaster at my regular pace, highest i hit is about 172

Those handlebars are inaccurate; the one at my gym says my heart is at 90 BPM then 180; then 60. If you were at 192 you would most likely fall off the stairs.

Get a HRM.. Nike makes some good ones.. never cared too much for the Polars, but some people like them. The handlebars on the cardio equipment are junk from what I have experienced... Like Konitz said, 60 then 180 then120.. all over the place. Most of the equipment today will sync with the one that you are wearing (chest strap)and display that so you don't have to keep looking a the watch itself.

Lol ya that's what I thought. For me they don't jump like how you described it. I'll start around 80bpm then gradually increase to 120 than 145 then 160 and lastly 170. When it decreases it moves gradually as well

ya i was using the handle bars, i think there a lil inaccurate myself, so i was shooting high... once it says im at my target hr, it will keeps changeing the resistance to keep it there.... i would buy those things that go around ur chest with a watch but they a lil expensive arent they?

Nope. if your heart rate is in your fat burning zone doesn't matter what you use, you gonna burn the same amount of calories.

The Nike one I have was about $50.00 on ebay NWT (normally about $80.00 through Nike.com). I just bought this one for my wife though and it is a little cheaper. Newegg.com - Oregon Scientific SE102 Heart Rate Monitor
