  • Flexing abs throughout the day?

One of the dudes I work with, who i still ripped as shit at 50 and apparently used to compete back in the day, was talking to me a little bit about ab work. He mentioned that throughout the day, (because we just sit in cubicles at our job), he will just constantly flex his abs almost like an isometric move on and off throughout the day. Says it habit at this point, and he is done it for years. Anyone think there is any advantage to this? Maybe a little more core strength or a little more pop in the abs once you reach a lower BF%?

Well, isometrics certainly help with strength. Fight trainers like Ross Enamait feel that isometrics are a key component of weight-class based training since you want to gain strength without gaining weight. While most of the isometric work I have seen involve shoulders, chest, legs, etc., perhaps there is value in isometric core training. I can see how this might work, since gymnastics training involves lots of static holds primarily stressing the core, things like front levers and such. Not sure there would be value for hypertrophy though.
