  • Weight lifting belts weakening your back?

Had a conversation with this guy the other day and he was deadlifting without a belt hitting 405 doing stiff legs. I asked him why he doesnt use a belt and he says it actually makes yur back weaker. He claims he has family in the NFL and the trainers tell the players not to use belts because it helps with impacts and such so u wont throw yur back out that easily. He also told me thats why sum people can lift super heavy in the gym with belts on but throw their backs out lifting furniture at the house or sum shit. Kinda sounds stupid to me but I was woundering if theres any truth to belts actually weakining yur back when u dont wear them..

I think there is a half truth to what he is saying.

You see some guys wearing a belt for everything they do, in that sense yes it could weaken your back as the stabilizer muscles aren't being used. But if you are doing massive kinds of weight, i think a belt has its place.
