  • Resistance training OR Free Weights?

I was wondering if anyone has tried resistance training like the Bowflex and if it's worth buying, or should I just get a membership to the Gym?
Please reply If anyone has tried the Bowflex and seen results.

    Thanks

ive heard many people say that the bowflex can be used to maintain your gains but it not worth the money if you're trying to make gains. arent they like $1000, i'd just join a gym!

There's nothing like freeweights. With a $1000 you could start a real nice home gym if you don't wanna join anywhere. OR, like Beast said just join a gym.

heard people liked them, after looking into it more not something I would put over a membership. It may be able to do a lot as on piece of equipment, but there is a ton more that can be done in a gym with knowledge that could never be done on a bowflex.

Agree 100% I put together a home gym with everything I need including a Squat rack for 1/2 that.

Look for a place called "Play It Again Sports" They nave gone national. They sell both used and new equipment that they pick at low prices and pass the saving on. you can get plates for pennies per pound.

If you are anything like me I like the competitive aspect of going to a gym.. I always have a spotter I like to compete with the other guys in there so It pushes me to go harder. If I were at home I would prbably prcrastonate and not do it. There are to many distractions. I would go with a free weight set to use on day I couldnt make it to the gym.You can get an olympic bar and 300 lbs of weight and a bench for about 200 bucks.

See I'm so not like that. By the time I get home from work the last thing I want to do is change and go right out to the gym. by time I unwind and I'm ready to work I really don't feel like drive 20-30 min to the gym.
With a home gym I get home chill for a while and then. just walk in the garage. I haven't missed a work out unless I was unable to be home since I put in my home gym.

I agree. I do the same thing, except I don't workout after work, hehe. But just go in garage and put on some music and your set. Only thing that sucks about weights in the garage is the weather can be too cold or too hot to workout. Last summer I tried working out in my garage in like 100+ degree weather with no air circulation and not too much water, I almost passed out, had to rest for a day.

number one all training is "resistance" training. Free weights are gravity based training. with say a barbell curl, gravity is the force you are fighting and that is what is making your muscle contract. the first 20 or 30 degrees of the movement are wasted horizontal movement that have no direct stimulation on your bicep muscle. the middle 10 degrees or so is the only point at which the bicep muscle is being optimally loaded (which is ironically the "sticking point" for people because it is the only spot with actual resistance against the bicep). it is the only point where the weight is being pulled veritically by gravity against your muscle. after that point it is once again horinzontal movement in the last part of the movement which unloads your muscle. on the other hand what you were trying to ask is whether variable resistance machines are comparable or better than free weights. in the above example they are. the resistance begins at the start of the movement since the resistance is attached to a cam and you do not have to rely on gravity. as you move through the motion with a machine there is effective resistance against the muscle through all degrees (I should say with a quality machine-medx, nautilus, hammer strength, strive, superslow). so what would rather use a machine which will have a 180 degree resistance curve or a barbell curl with only 10-15 degrees of direct resistance? you can use comparable examples for most exercises.
