I have a question for my wife.We recently had a daughter 4 months ago and my wife is in need of some nutrition advice. She is 35 5'-7" and weighs about 105 lbs now. She never carried alot of weight and has a very high metabolism but since she is now breast feeding she has went from 130 when pregnant to 105.To make things worse the baby developed a milk allergy and now my wife has to watch what she eats. So my question is what are some good meals to keep some weight on? She is currently unable to work out and cannot take whey since it is a by product of milk.any advice will be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Well, my first question is what your wife's goals are.
If she's 5'7" amd weighs 105, I'm having a hard time figuring out why she needs to watch what she eats

The reason is that since she is breast feeding and the baby developed a milk allergy.Anything she eats intern the baby gets.Alot of the stuff she would usually eat is made with milk.I usaully cook a very good meal for dinner which is high in protein but she is running out of things she can eat alone. She wants to tone up but not get real muscular and deffinately put back on some weight about 10 to 15 lbs.

Ok, well if she wants to put on some weight, then have her simply increase her calories in a sensible fashion.Originally posted by KING DAVID 2The reason is that since she is breast feeding and the baby developed a milk allergy.Anything she eats intern the baby gets.Alot of the stuff she would usually eat is made with milk.I usaully cook a very good meal for dinner which is high in protein but she is running out of things she can eat alone. She wants to tone up but not get real muscular and deffinately put back on some weight about 10 to 15 lbs.
She should probably eat about 1gm of protein per lb of bodyweight.
Breakfast- 3 egg whites,2 whole. 1-2 slices of wheat toast or 1/2c oatmeal
Snack- Handful of almonds & an apple or rice cake
Lunch-Chicken salad
Snack- same as earlier
Dinner- whatever you cook

Since she is nursing, she's burning more cal's than normal to produce the milk.
If she and the baby can tollerate soy, she can try replacing some of her normal milk products with soy. There are soy based protein powders and bars she can try.
So, for breakfast she can have a big bowl of oatmeal or dry cereal (choose a healthy one) made with soy milk. Or an omlet made with soy cheese.
For a snack, a handful of nuts, or a tbsp. peanutbutter on one slice of wholegrain bread or on apple slices and a glass of soy milk.
Lunch, chicken salad (or tuna...something with protein) on wholegrain bread (2 slices).
Snack, some fruit, blueberries, strawberries, apples are good.
Dinner, a decent serving of protein (meat/chicken/fish), a carb (sweet potato, white potato, rice, bread, etc.), and a salad or veggie.
If she can tollerate another snack, something with protein would be good here, even half a portion of a soy protein shake or bar.
I'm curious, what reaction is the baby having to mom consuming dairy? I nursed for over a year and my daughter wasn't bothered by anything I consumed, however when she went on to all regular foods and drinks, she developed rashes attributed to dairy. I cut out all of her dairy for a few weeks, then introduced it to her again in very small amounts, a little more every few weeks, and then she was fine with it. Maybe that would work for your wife and baby?Last edited by Puddles; 08-16-05, 05:09 PM.

First of all thank you for both of your input.I will definitely give her the info and she will also appreciate it. Puddles I give you alot of credit for nursing for a year that is definitely alot of hard work and the answer to your question is that there were small traces of blood in her diaper and the doctor tested and thats what they found(milk allergy). But when she asks for advice they dont even give her a straight answer on what to eat.I figure they are the doctors they should know.I got more advice here than she did. Thanks again.

I forgot to mention, your wife should be taking a calcium supplement since she'll be avoiding dairy and she should continue to take her pre-natal vitamins. Nursing mothers should be consuming 1200 mg/calcium a day, her body will suffer in the long run if she doesn not have enough calcium because her body will take what she has and put it into the breast milk.
She had a pretty significant weight loss and may not realize it, but breast feeding burns up to 900 cal's a day. Encourage her to take a good look at her diet. She should be consuming about 2500 cal/day from healthy foods.
Although I suggested peanut butter, almond butter would be a better idea because peanuts are another very common food allergy and since your daughter's already shown one food allergy, it wouldn't be uncommon for her to develop another.
Hope it all works out!
