  • damn pec injury!

ok last night i was doing incline presses on a smith machine like i've done for years. i always use like a pyramid style weight increase on these, i have went well past 400lbs for 6 reps in the past and last night my third set was at 380lbs which last week i got for 10 reps. i was trying to match that last night and on i think the third rep i felt and really painful pulling feeling in the left pec just where it inserts under the armpit. i stopped the workout immediatly. i felt that i may have torn something so i quit, i called up a buddy of mine that tore is upper pec 2 years ago and told him what happened. he said that when his happened there was sharp pains and a hard knot formed in less than 10 min. after it happened. he said that the next morning it was bruised really bad. i told him that there wasnt a knot of much swelling just really sore and tender to the touch, theres no bruising that i can see this morning. he said it sounded to him like a bad strain and not a tear like he had that required surgery. what does it sound like to you all?

I'm no authority by any means but that does NOT sound like you tore it. What your buddy describes is a tear, the muscle actually pulls away and curls up. Thats what the knot is and all the bruising. One more rep and it may have.

You could have a slight or partial tear. I did it about 5 years ago right where the pec connects under the arm pit. it took me 6 months before i could put over 225 on the bar I did it while I was doing 425 on flat bench. Mine never turned black or bruised but was sore as mo.fu. Yours sounds very similar to my injury, I never went to the doctor I just got depressed and quit working bench for a while. I think everytime that i tried to do something it aggrevated the injury and that is what took so long for mine to heal. I would recommend that you go see someone (doctor or p.t.) I really don't know how bad yours is, I think that i actually aggrevated mine the set prior to injuring my peck. When I went down with the 425 I knew immediately and somebody had to help me get it up. best of luck, injuries suck!

any bruising (see image)? i assume you didnt hear a pop or have significant tearing sensation or pain. you need to be very cautious at this point. do not take it lightly. get it checked out asap before you train again. dont fuck around or you could endup with a complete rupture of the distal tendon or tear the muscle. so if you weakened the muscle (incomplete or partial tear) you could overburdening the tendon on your next lift. most likely you have a incomplete tear caused by the excessive force. if you tear it completely then you will require surgery. sling for 4 weeks postoperative and 3-6 months of rehab.

Mine never looked like that but I do remeber a very sharp burning sensation. It actually felt more like the tendon than the muscle. Like he said don't take it lightly!

thanks for the replies, i'm gonna take it easy for sure, not gonna do anything chest or shoulders at all for a couple weeks and see how it feels..... when i hold my arm back as if i were doing a fly there isn't reallly any pains just really sore and worse when i touch it. still no bruising.
i felt it too on the downward part of the movement and when i pushed up it started hurting.

Wow....almost the EXACT same thing I was going to post, except I was left with an indent in the place where it tore. It's definitely a pain in the ass injury because only time will heal it and in that particular area it can affect so many other workouts (shoulders, tris, obviously chest). All I can say is give it time and see how it feels. After I did it, even when I attempted to do dumbell flies with the 5 lb dumbells I couldnt....Time healed it for me but then it happen again, since then I've never done barbell bench again, I do all my chest workouts with dumbells or machines.

After I patially tore my pec I couldn't train chest for a year. It will heal but it takes a long time and if you keep trying to rush it, it will end up taking longer to heal.

how long did it take for yours to heal, i mean how long was it before you could get an effective chest workout?

Yup. I have the same thing on the same spot, and I never saw a doctor either. Mine happened about two years ago during bench press,my guess is it is not a tear, there was or is no brusing.in my case anyways,it hurts during my warm up set, some times I have to do two warm up sets cause I got whole bunch of other injuries to go with that but that is not the point now,so I think it is just a strained tendon. And again in my case I think it is strained and streched tendon.I think you should take it easy for a week or two take some Aleve or Motrin to relax the muscle or releve the any possible inflamation. Hope you feel better soon.

yea that's what i planning to do, take it easy for a couple weeks and not directly work chest or shoulders at all and just how i feel... i'm taking hydocodone that i have for my back (yea another injury back in the summer) for the pain and swelling. hopefully it will get better as time goes on. this morning it feels like i may have a little more range of motion but its still very sensitive when i touch it.
