Just wondering because there's a competition here in my town called "ToughMan Contest" and it's a boxing match. I went to it last year and in my weight class (170 and under) the final two guys were a white guy weighing 114 lbs. and a mexican guy that weighed 156 lbs. The match lasted about 30 seconds. The mexican guy hit him in the gut and he quit. The pot is $1000 and I'm thinking about entering cuz I could use the cash and I just can't see very many people under 170 that I don't think I could handle.

Boxing and "Toughman" competetions usually have very little in common. When you get to the finals, there are some boxers there, but at local levels, it's mainly just "bar-room brawling". If you enter another, don't even throw a punch the first round. Lay on the ropes and cover up and let him bang on you. You'll get jarred around a bit, but the other guy is going to go all out to blow you away. After two minutes of steady punching, he's your's in round 2 because he shot his wad in 1. BB

Yeah I thought about that. I'm going to start punching a bag in the gym on leg day until I absolutely wear out. I just figure it's $25 to enter, $1000 if I win. Why not give it a shot especially since I know I could have beaten both the newbs last year even if they came at me at the same time.

I wouldn't do it.... getting pummeled in the head that is, for any amount of money.
A couple of years ago, some woman in the audience in some amateur boxing contest got up and competed against another woman on a dare - got one blow to the head, went down and never woke up again. One unlucky punch in the wrong spot, plus any undetected weakness in a blood vessel in the skull is all it will take....
Not worth the risk, bro..... there are less risky ways to make a thousand bucks.
Just my opinion....

I do a little kickboxing training, but nothing in a competition yet. Like the others said, if he has no training at all he'll gas by the end of the first round and within the first 1/4 of the second round. Just be sure to cover your chin and work on your abs. A hard hit to the abs will drop you faster than you think if you aren't prepared for it.
Train yourself in three minute rounds with a 30 sec. to 1 minute break. Three minutes doesn't sound like much but it is when you are boxing and not conditioned for it. Boxing is not like running, the breathing is different and it exhuast your body quicker due to the fact that you can't control your breathing in the same way as just doing some sort of cardio.
Good luck with it if you decide to try it out.

I think in the toughman comps they wear the headgear, so it shouldn't be too bad. Either or, I don't think i'd want to sit there and let someone pound on me trying to wear em out. They may get that lucky punch that sends my ass to the floor. Just go hard, or go home.Originally posted by Scrumhalf

You do wear the headgear, which in my experience goofin around with friends, absorps quite alot of a side of the face and head hit, especially with 12 lb gloves. I'm going to do alot of work on my abs - have needed to for a while anyway, 6-pack has turned into a 2, sometimes 4 pack.Originally posted by beefcake

I appreciate all the input so far. If you guys have any other suggestions for training, that'd be great. I just can't do PH's for another 3 weeks cuz I just got off 1 week ago.

Going off some of those posts, the toughman has had some media attention in the past from boxers that were killed in the ring during the toughman fights.
While the headgear is on, you can still get knocked out so don't feel too safe. One reason to cover up the most possible is because if your skill level is low you can open yourself up really easy by sitting there and trying to box someone that is just swinging away. Later in the rounds as he punches himself out the risk of being caught with a hard blow lowers.
I think it just comes down to being realistic about your skill level and that the guy you may fight against could very well be a badass.

If you cover up properly, especially with head-gear on, your hands are on either side of your head and your elbows are pressed tight against your sides. You can peek-a-boo through your gloves and see where the punches are coming from so you can "roll" with them. They used to use 16oz. gloves, I think 12's are a bit too light for "toughman". Anyway, if you cover up PROPERLY, none of these guys are going to hurt you---period! I'd almost bet you the $1000 that NONE of these guys can pound on you 2 minutes straight anyway. More like 45 seconds if that. They'll never recover in the 1 minute rest, and you can turn out their lights in the 2nd minute of the 2nd round, trust me. If you've never hit a "heavy bag", find one and try to go all out for 2 minutes, you'll see what I mean. Good luck! BB

Haha, i like you BB, give me even more confidence that I'm gonna whip some major @$$. I'm going to start the bag today. Hopefully a month pounding the bag for 5 sets of 3-4 minutes w/ 1 minute break between each day will give me some endurance and get me ready for it.
