Dont just blame the schools, blame the parents too. When I was young, my sisters and I tried out every sport my parents could afford to put us in. I remember spending after schools playing in the streets, riding our bikes around we had no nintendo and our parents didnt buy us movies to sit around and watch till bedtime.
Childhood was so great, so innocent and we were never fed McDonalds everyday, as McDonalds and sugar cereals were a "treat" that we got like once every two weeks.
Schools shouldnt be raising children either, it is not their responsiblity to make sure that kids are getting the proper nutrition and excercise each day. What they are responsible for are implementing programs, good phys ed programs for each and every grade level.
