  • Venting about yesterday's gym experience

Yesterday I was in the gym and there was this Dad in there with his son. Son was probably about 14-15, maybe 115 lbs. His dad was doing what any "non gym going" person does and training everything in one day for 6 hours straight. Well, he was doing back and was bent over and standing up, more like dangerous Hamstring lifts. I didn't say anything b/c he wasn't making his son do it. Well, eventually he got to squats. He had his very close together and was standing on his tiptoes while he did them. I have knee problems and know first hand that obviously your legs need to be spread a little more than shoulder width and feet need to be flat on the floor. Well, when his son got over there and he was making him do it that way, I couldn't stop myself b/c I don't want the kid to have bad knees like myself. I went over and told him the basics, spread legs, off toes, go deep as you can without hurting, preferably just parallel. Well the dad gets pissed and asks me " Who the hell made you the expert on this?" I just said, "Man, I've been working out for about a year and I have bad knees. I know what causes bad knees and I know what makes mine hurt and I don't want the same thing to happen to your son." He replies, "Well if I wanted your help, I'd ask for it." I almost lost it... but kept it in and walked away quietly and finished my day as he shot me dirty looks. His son did, however spread the legs and get off the toes. Why are some people like that??? I'm more than open to instruction, even though I've been at it for a while. I know I'm not an expert.

    Sorry so long, just venting

people need to be right, and if he admitted you were right it automaticly made him wrong. he would rather his son get bad info from him and save face than him swallow his pride and take a lesson from someone who offered help without being asked.

why ? well, you could have asked in a way that felt accusatory, he could have an ego problem or he could just have been having a bad day. Your conscience is clear, if he cared about anything other than being right he would have said thankyou.

I'd have gone postal on him right after he made the "who the hell made you the expert" comment.

Whenever people come up to me in the gym & take the time to offer advice, I'm usually very appreciative & take the time to listen(unless the person in some nutcase). The guy was just an asshole.

people who can listen and take critism-weather good or bad are much better people than the assholes that want to always be right. i find it almost a compliment if someone will stop me and correct me. it has taken me a long time to get where i am at and i didn't do it without help. if any of you are the ones that cannot take polite critism:fufool:

Yeah I get that shit all the time when I'm between training sessions. I'm trying to just help some people out cause I get bored between clients and they get snappy like they know it all. I just blow them off, I figure let them hurt themselves then....then I won't have to see them everyday at work. oh well

Jesus! Why would the guy NOT want his son to be healthy, especially in the knees? If the kid's knees go bad then he would have to cut the grass! Some guys just don't think....

Well...first off you did the right thing! Secondly...you made the guy look bad in front of his son, but it is his own fault! Don't let it bother you! When you see them again just go up to the dad and :pimpslap: the idiot!

I am gonna be the one to disagree here. I don't know how many of you are parents, but what you did was make the dad look bad in front of his son.

That was the source of his anger.

The better way to do it would to take the dad aside and tell him without his son hearing.

I realize you were trying to help, but the kid prolly thinks the world of his dad and parents lash out if they look bad in front of their kids.

... screw it then, let the kid and the dad mess themselves up... then i won't have to wait on them to use the leg press machine.
