I have had to hire upwards to 10 people the last year or so. For me as a manager, the key to a good interviewer is the questions that he/she asks me.

At the end of the interview, i always ask what questions they have for me. If they ask me some good solid questions, it really makes up for any deficiencies that they may have. The people that ask stupid questions or say that they dont have any questions, go to the bottom of my list.

For me, it is a decision maker if candidates are equal.

Ok, as a manager i have a question for you. I never know what kinds of questions i should ask the interviewers, what kinds of questions would you like to hear. If its not to much trouble.

      Thanks :)

"In five years, I see myself having advanced to become a valuable member of the *company name* team."

Doesn't get too specific, makes them think you're looking to advance WITHIN their company.

That was realy good.... shows ambition (education and expanding) and humility (willing to learn, help in any way possible). That is the combination that would not set off alarm bells if I was an interviewer.

I have interviewed many candidates over several years, most of them PhDs looking to join our R&D department and this is what I am looking for. Now, I know that people can be coached well to say just what you want to hear, so if I hear all the right things it may not mean much but if I hear the wrong things, it is a dead giveaway.

Your answers should also match the kind of job you are being hired for. For example, if a PhD who is interviewing for a technical staff member position in our department told me that he was interested in becoming a manager in 3-5 years, it is the kiss of death. Why the hell did you spend 4-6 years in grad school learning to become a scientist if you want to ambition is to go into management? I mean, it may happen that way but it sure cannot be your prime motivation!

That may be true bro, but you cannot come to an interview with that attitude. You are marketing yourself and the employer is a prospective buyer and you need to put on a positive spin, regardless of what your real feelngs/intentions are.. No different from sales...

That was fine. You're showing you want to advance, you're willing to work for it with continuing your education, and you're showing some loyalty to the company.

getting a job nowadays in most instances is just kissing ass and making it seem like you won't come back at some point and shoot everyone in the office if you get pissed off. Most managers and higher ups are dumbasses who just there because they have worked a long time and not necessarily because they are a good judge of character. I would say just be yourself. I hate interviews myself because they do ask the same questions which begs the questions- are these people so dumb they can't come up with their own questions instead of reading "The managers hand guide to stupid traditional questions!!!!" My next interview if I hear one of those stupid questions I am going to ask them why they are so conditioned to ask them instead of being their own person, see what kind of response I get. LOL

Did you say ..."shit up"? LOL Anyway, when you go for an interview you have to give them the impression that you are what that company needs to succeed! I make them believe that I am the one they have been looking for and that I have several other job offers! When they ask what you will be doing in five years, tell them that you will own the company! That lets them know you have ambition!

Questions to ask them, somewhat depend on the company or type of job.

I am in advertising, graphic design...... so i ask them about who are their major clients? Where they have their printing done... Show interest in the position and the company, and not what they have to offer you.

I suck at interviewing fyI... THere were many jobs i was definantly qualified for that i blew the interview.
