Bush's beliefs on this topic is the sole reason I do not want him in office anymore. However, I don't think a change in office is wise at this point in time either. I'm not really to sure about Kerry, he goes back and forth too much. I am really up in the air with this election. Stem cell research is way to vital to the medical world to push it off any longer. Ahhhhhh, conservatives. They are the downfall if this nation. Hell they are the only reason we are one of the few countries to not use the metric system as the standard system.

sorry Bouncer - i forgot to answer that question. stem cells are basically 'unassigned cells'. they have not yet been given the role of blood cell, nerve cell, or brain cell, etc. through external stimulation via certain chemicals, scientists are beginning to have control over the function that stem cells will take. in other words they are able to manipulate the set of genetic instructions the cell will assume.

other technology exists called recombinant DNA technology. this technology has existed for several years and is actually how modern insulin is produced. scientists are able to use enzymes in order to splice together DNA. e coli bacteria is very commonly used for this purpose - basically, the DNA, or genetic code for producing the protein, insulin, is spliced into the bacteria's existing DNA and the bacteria then begins secreting insulin. It is a much more complicated process, but that's it in a nutshell.

You failed to mention that the cells are usually "collected" from human embryos.

Bush and his religious-right politics scare me. As far as Stem cell research goes the idea that there are that many abortions going on so why not use the fetus is fine but if he has his way those will stop as well. It's easy for a guy like him to take the stance he has taken...It has not effected him personally yet. I love that Nancy Reagan is no one of the most outspoken proponents of stem cell research due to the fact that she had to watch her husband lose his, mind, dignity and life at the hands of ahlzhiemers(sp?). Do you think the Reagan's would have supported stem cell research while Ron was president? I would say no. What would W do if he had to watch a loved one waste away with ahlzhiemers or parkinsons?
