the question that i was asked was not about the process, but if it was DNA technology. if i were to give an accurate description of the process, it would take a little more than a few sentences - i was providing a very brief summary to help someone understand the difference in technology. do you have anything constructive to offer or are you going to continue to try and make ignorant parallels between this subject and Kerry’s failing memory?

I haven't read this whole thread but I must point out that you are somewhat off-course. The president doesn't make laws. Congress does. If Congress didn't create the legislation and vote it into law, the president couldn't do shit. your averice is a little misplaced. Look at the Congressmen who sponser bills opposing Stem Cell research, not who is president. He is just the last stage of the process, not the driving force behind the law to begin with.

executive communication is a major source for legislative proposals. these communications quite often come from the president himself or his cabinet. i don't think i am off course at all. sure the president does not have the final word, but his word rings quite loudly through the entire process.

Just a minor bump in the road, LOL. We have already synthesized a fluorescent dye that can be used to selectively "light up" stem cells (in bone marrow for example). The fluorescent cells can then be sorted and isolated. A new company has been started around our first generation dye called Stemco. I have synthesized the second generation dye as well with some improvements. Stemco sells stem cell isolation kits based on this technology.

Stem cells are especially rich in an enzyme called Aldehyde Dehydrogenase. The dye is a substrate for that enzyme and gets oxidized to a carboxylate which is charged at physiological pH. Since charged species can't get across the cell membrane, this effectively traps the fluorescent dye molecule inside the stem cell. Now the stem cell glows brightly and is easily separated from all the other cells.

I just got paid a "milestone" payment a few days ago for leasing the patent to Stemco. I am getting myself a new bow with it :D .

This was your original question. You follow with a very specific statement that stem cell research is responsible for the advancement in medical technolgy. The fact of the matter is that stem cell research is at present, a very small but extremely controversial slice of the overall medical technology pie. There are tremendous advancements being made an many areas of the medical field from, research and development, all the way through emergency care, and into long term chronic disease treatments. True, some stem cell related developments have made extremely significant contributions, but the controversy surrounding the human embryo side of the research has hindered it's progress significantly. This is one of the primary reasons scientists and R&D teams have been searching for alternative sources for the exploitation of these type cells. As for why someone would make a decision based on their religeous beliefs, you need only take a quick refresher in world history.

I've been an er nurse for 10 years and I haven't seen any milestones of improvement...if anything everything is getting worse! There's been drugs that come and go and have been touted as the wonder drug but later reseach proves dangerous side effects or that the initial research was skewed. Then we just go back to what we've been doing all along.
Government regulations are breathing down the necks of the hospitals and making up all new laws to "protect" the patients but in the process makes it worse. Each time I go to work adminstration has come up with more steps and more paperwork to protect themselves.
Yeah, let's make it better...put a fucking weak ass liberal in office to give everything to everybody! That would make everything simpler! "Here, you don't need to work for anything...just take it!" Nevermind that someone goes to school for years and endures only to pay 50 and 60 thousand dollars a year in taxes so that garbage can smoke and drink and not work, "cause I'm disabled."
Someone needs to stand up for what they believe in and have been taught: whether in school, values at home or yes I shiver to think, at church! I applaud any politian who can take a stand.
