Only (5) Cat 5 hurricanes have ever hit the US since they have been tracking them. The ones that did, killed hundreds of people and caused enormous amounts of destruction...as one would expect.

I'll trade you one propane tank and one GH kit for a generator. You ship first. :POriginally posted by THE BOUNCER
i need some propain also. get me some while your out and FedeX it over night. i will pay you later. thanks
redMachchick, having your electric lines underground means nothing, all of our lines are underground too but half of my development lost electric with Frances and they were out for 4 or 5 days. Our phone and cable modem also went down and those lines are underground. If they have generators and you're near where Ivan may hit, get one. You can return it if you don't need it but better safe than sorry. I doubt they have any left today though, the manager said they all sold out today.
We're seriously thinking of getting outta here, if a 5 hits it's gonna be dangerous. Tomorrow we'll book with Southwest, they have refundable tickets, so if we don't use them we're not at a complete loss.

Sure doesn't. If something takes out the lines or substation feeding your house, complex, neighborhood, etc...power will be lost regardless of where your lines are located.Originally posted by Puddles

Great idea....spontaneous trips can be the best kind. If I were you, I'd head to Scottsdale AZ or somewhere like that. Well out of the way of hurricanes, definately not gonna get any rain there...the very opposite of wet this time of year (highs in the low 100's).Originally posted by Puddles

We booked tickets to Chicago. We have friends there and my daughter and mother hasn't been to that city before. We're still gonna work on getting a generator because if Ivan lightens up or changes course we'll stay put and if we go, we'll just let our neighbors use it. This morning's track has they eye right over Tampa but of course that will probably change a million times before it makes landfall in FL.

urso8up...are you making plans to leave? Flying will be easier than driving as the roads are gonna be a mess. Take a look at Southwest for tickets (refundable if not used). If they're booked, try JetBlue (they don't offer refunds but you can cancel them and use them at another time for a $25 fee).
Stromba is on line at Home DePot. The line is 150 people deep and they said if everyone takes 10 sheets of plywood, they will run out by the time it's his turn. We have a lead on a generator thanks to blm, his friend is going to call me back in a bit.

Box is cleaned out now. Sorry!
We got 10 sheets of plywood but need more so we'll head back and hope they still have some. Only 10 per customer. Stores are sold out of the right kind of screws for this stuff but something is better than nothing, got a box of long wood screws that may work. Maybe ductape? LOL

Good luck on that one!!!:( We went to home depot last night and people were lined up but no plywood, one of the employees said another shipment would be in this morning at 5-6pm so we got there and waited 45 minutes untill it arrived, and by the time we left dropped the plywood off and brought back the truck we rented it was GONE!!! This hurricane business is driving me CRAZY!!!!:drunk: :drunk: lolOriginally posted by Puddles

Well, we went back and got in line. 5 hrs. later we were home with another 10 for us and my mom and my friend each got 10 a piece for my friend's house. About half of my windows are covered and tomorrow we'll finish the rest, then head over to help our friend do theirs. Get this...the only plywood that was available was 3/4" furniture grade at $35 a sheet this afternoon. This morning was 3/4" but not as pretty so that was $25 a sheet. It cost us $600 for wood but I shouldn't complain, at least we got it. We had a good group of people by us on line, we set up some chairs, made a run to Ruby Tuesdays, took turns walking around the store holding each other's spots, flipping through do-it-yourself books, and just bs'ing the whole time. So many other people were there scowling and just in pissy moods then bitching about the price of the wood once it became available. The store was out of the right kind of screws, so hubby met up with a friend who had a box and now he's driving to his parents for some masonary screws so we can finish this project. I didn't realize it, but if you use the wrong kind of screws the wind will just blow the wood right off the house. Still couldn't get a generator, but if we fly out to Chicago, we should be able to get one there and bring it home for the future. Tomorrow we'll work on preparing the store and Sunday we'll finish doing stuff inside the house like taking down mirrors and pictures off the walls, putting stuff in garbage bags in case we get water in the house, etc. I'm so tired but wired...just took a vallium and hope to fall asleep early tonight.

Ivan is gathering steam again over the warm waters....they're predicting it will get back to Category 5 :( Even worse, it's looking like the eye wall is going to come awfully close to Tampa. Glad you have plans to get the family out of town, Puddles!
