Thanks, everyone. The surgery went well.

It wound up being scar tissue about the size of the doctor's fist attached to the abdominal walls which is what they thought was a tumor, caused by years of diverticulitis which had been misdiagnosed as an ulcer many years ago plus a polyp but it looks normal, non-cancerous.

They removed about 10" of her colon, sewed her back up, no colostomy bag. She's in severe pain and has bad reactions to anestessia and pain meds, so every 7 minutes that we hit the pump she was doubled over on her side dry heaving for hours. I taught her some deep breathing exercises and to keep her eyes closed for the first 30 seconds after she hits the pump and to just let the meds float her away and that worked and stoped the dry heaving.

The dry heaving was painful since they had to cut into the abdominal muscles pretty badly and she was having such bad muscle spasms in her back I had to massage her back through the dry heaving. Poor thing...I hated seeing her suffer so much.

The first two days will be the hardest, then on the 3rd day they can start giving her sips of water. She should be out of the hospital in a week.

The nurse earlier in the day sucked. First she grabbed mom's wrist where a needle was still taped in from surgery and then when she pulled it out, she just put a bandaid on it and walked out of the room, within seconds it started bleeding profusely so I grabbed it and stopped the bleeding but had she been alone she would have lost a lot of blood. I was so pissed. Then later she made mom move up in the bed by having me help her...we grabbed the blanket she was laying on and on the count of 3 we hauled her up about a foot...that sent mom into intense pain for the next 10 minutes. It should have been done differently, more slowly and gently. Some nurses just really don't care about their patients and treat them like pieces of meat with no feelings. I will request that nurse not tend to her for the rest of her stay.

The night nurse is wonderful so I came home to get some sleep and tomorrow morning we'll be getting her up out of bed to walk to the door a few times.

She said she's never been in so much pain before. When they asker her on a scale of 1 to 10 how bad the pain was she said it was a 50 shortly after surgery. She was so out of it she couldn't even push the pump button herself. By the time I left she said it was a 3 with the pain pump managing the pain well. I tied the pump button to the rail on the bed by her hand so she can't drop it and made sure she was able to handle it herself for an hour before I left.

She's a tough old lady though, eats right, does 60 minutes of cardio 5 days a week and I started her weight training a few months ago so she'll pull through this and recover better than most her age.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers.

                        Thanks again guys!

Mom did much better today. We changed pain meds and she's tollerating them better. Got her up and walking around 5 times too!

A guy friend of mine had the same surgery, he's in his mid 30's, surgery was laproscopic, yet he was completely bedridden for the first 2 days. Mom's a tough old German lady.

Looking forward to another good day tomorrow.

I told her all my online friends were praying and wishing her well...she appreciates it.
