  • My friend may need a liver transplant because of Tylenol

I just got off the phone with his brother.
He took some Tylenol and had a few drinks.

    He started throwing up yesterday.

According to his doctor his liver is headed toward failure and they will know in a day or so if he needs a transplant.

I just read on the net that 40% of all liver failures in the US are from Tylenol.

    Many do not involve drinking.
Many involve a single overdose of Tylenol which can be as little as 8 500mg tabs in a 24 hour period.

There is no reason to take this drug. - Ever

I request your kind thoughts and prayers.

MOst of it is based off of weight, but a rule of thumb is that about 10g of tylenol can wreck the liver. Many people OD on tylenol, thinking that any drug will do, but the fact of the matter is, tylenol is terrible for an OD. It rarely kills someone right away. It takes out the liver, which leads to death down the road. If a liver has been totally knocked out, there is no chance of survival and the person generally has about 24-48 hours to live. It is quite serious.

Sorry to ramble, was just trying to be educational. Godspeed brother.

he'll be in my prayers as well.
i've never really seen the use in tylenol, i've never noticed any discomfort from aspirin or other NSAID's, thus eliminating the applicability to me of the single marketing claim of tylenol, that it's easier on the stomach.

                  Thanks guys.

It looks like his liver function is returning.

                  He should be ok.

After a night of drinking, he started to throw up. He took 2 Tylenol and threw up again. He ASSUMED that he threw up the tylenol and took more.
He threw up again and took MORE.

I never said he was bright.

I have not been able to reach him by phone by his brother said that he is getting better because according to him he is being an "asshole" again.

Thanks for the kind thoughts and prayers.

Thank goodness. That is pretty scary when you think this is the first drug they let you give your kids that is safe????

Guys, tylenol is safe in recommended doses. There is LOTS of medical uses for tylenol, not sure why many of you are suddenly acting like it is evil. Aspirin in the same way, it is a good way to help prevent and treat a heart attack, but yet, many try to argue that it shouldn't be allowed since it kills so many. Well, if no one would over dose, then perhaps the number would be so little you wound't know it could be harmful.

Drinking puts stress on the liver, more than a dose of tylenol, why not blame his drinking? Perhaps he drank enough that his liver started going out and the tylenol only added to it.

                          His diagnosis was tylenol overdose.

We all know that you can get messed up taking too much of anything. Tylenol has the potential to do harm at only moderate amounts above the recommended dosage.

People have od'ed because they took some tabs and also took cold medicine that had Tylenol in it.

My mother takes Vicoden for back pain. She did not know that Vicodens are 95% Tylenol. She also takes Tylenol PM to help her sleep. We discovered this during our convo about my friend.

According to what I have read, the amount she takes everyday could harm someone that is especially sensitive to it. Obviously she is going to stop and seek other medication
