  • You guys won't believe this.

I finally get back into the gym after two weeks off to allow my torn bicep to heal and now I am out again.

I did a light chest workout yesterday. First day back so I didn't go over 175 lbs on the bench and only did a couple sets. Then I did some light tricep push downs (not over 70 lbs) and did a couple sets. Everything was OK but I didn't want to push it so I called it a day. Then, I go to my Taekwondo class and I am sparring with this 12 year old kid. We both went to kick at the same time and his shin parted my toes between the 3rd and 4rth toes and the sideways force broke my 4rth and 5th toes off at the base. They were lying at a 90 degree angle from the rest of my toes; really weird looking and obviously broken.

I can't believe my bad luck. First my bicep now this. The only thing I could work on while my bicep was healing was legs and I made some good progress in my squats. Now I won't be able to squat for 4 to 6 weeks :( . At least I can still work my upper body.

You must have done something to piss off the iron gods. Better sacrafice a goat or something. :D Naw, I know how you feel. I remember when I broke my hand and couldn't train the right side of my body for weeks. Coming back I was weak as hell.

Damn. Bad things tend to happen in threes though, so watch out.

Ka is a wheel....things are bound to improve again. Try to stay positive. Although it really sucks, it could have been worse.

Sorry to hear that spidey, Just stick to the open chain exercised for your legs. See if you can put some sort of thin block in the middle of your feet for calf raises(if it dosn't hurt). It will have to be tall enough to allow ROM , but wide enough so it dosn't roll under your feet. You will need to hold onto something to get proper balance. If you have a dip belt, you can put wieght on that to add to your calf raises.

Yeah, it was really kind of a freak accident. I had my toes rolled back as I should but he was stepping in with his kick so we ended up too close or something. Ironically, I had just finished warning him to keep his toes rolled back. He was getting tired and his form was slipping. I was afraid he might break HIS toes, LOL. "Keep those toes back Chris. You don't want to break them....CRACK...just like that", I said.

They didn't swell up and turn black like broken toes normally do so I thought they might just be dislocated. X-rays proved otherwise though. The broken ends of the bone in my 4rth toe was at a ~45 deg angle and the ends on my 5th toe weren't even touching and that toe was laying at a 90 deg angle to the good three.

I was in shock; literally and figuratively. I just couldn't believe my bad luck. I sat down for the rest of the class (only about 5 or 10 minutes) and then two of the guys helped me hop to my car. The guy at the front desk gave me a free muscle milk and that helped me feel a bit better. I drove myself to the emergency room and the rest is history

They numbed them up good before setting them (thank god) but it was still really weird to watch him pulling, twisting and molding my toes like they were putty. He put a ball point pen between the 4rth and 5th toes and wrenched it upright. A little pull here and a little twist there and " I think that looks about right, don't you?" It was a strange experience.

Now I have this special shoe to keep them still and supported and a pair of crutches. I can already bare some weight on that foot though so maybe it won't be so long as I thought. We'll see.
