Most larger companies will try to get away with paying as little as possible, that is simply more profitable for them. With the company I worked for, I stayed on for a while longer after that raise then relocated to another state so I had to leave before my next annual review. I later found out that they hired 3 people to do the job I was doing. I was definitely overworked and underpaid but that's how life goes sometimes. I took a stand and asked for more money and got it. If I'd have stayed on and they offered me another inadequate raise, I'd have asked for more again and most likely received it.
