Do they not do any kind of base running conditioning. I swear if they have to run more than on base, you would think they just ran a marathon. I was watching sports center the other day and a guy try to make and in the park HR. By the time he got to third he just kind of stumbled around the base and didn't even come close. Other than lineman and bodybuilders (I'm sure there's a few others but you get my point) how can you consider yourself and athlete if you can't run longer than 30 seconds.

Baseball never utilizes the aerobic system. Base running is strictly anaerobic glycolysis.
No players in baseball (well maybe a handful) train for inside the park homeruns. These are VERY rare, so rare in fact, they are not trained for in season or out. Base runners rarely even train to leg out a triple. If you do not train for it and condition your body to have the ability to run 360 feet, youre probably not going to make it. Is it their fault? No. It simply is too rare to practice. Besides, the emphasis on todays game is hitting the ball 500 feet.

Having played ball for many years myself, it is not an important issue to players or coaches that they be able to run all of the bases at once. They emphasize mainly on getting from one base to the next. Speed drills are practiced but that is for just seeing how fast you can run 90 feet. Baseball is a game of strategy. Get a guy on base and then decide the next move. That is why they have coaches that tell pitchers what to pitch, batters how to swing or bunt and base coaches telling runners when to run or not.Originally posted by YellowJacketBaseball never utilizes the aerobic system. according to Merriam-Webster dictionary....Originally posted by Shibbyhow can you consider yourself and athlete if you can't run longer than 30 seconds.
athlete-a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.
Just because they can't run longer than 30 seconds without getting winded does not mean they should not be considered an athlete. They are trained to see what kind of pitch may be coming at them and how they should swing at it. There muscles may not be big but they have the ability to throw a baseball 200 or 300 feet or more from the outfied. and do this over and over agian. My arm would fall off if I tried that, but I can run more than 90 feet and not get winded.
They use to say he same thing about NASCAR drivers not being athletes, but if you can sit in a car and turn left for 5-6 hours at 180-200 mph you have stamina and you are an athlete.

I guess it's just the way I look at athletes. Have you seen that new reebok comercial with Iverson talking about "how his jump shot has gotten him a car, a house, an agent, yes sir people, but none of that stuff can give you a jump shot". I just look at baseball and for the most part of it as long as you take the time to practice just about anyone could become a pro. Sure you have to have something specific the scouts are looking for at that time, but really, other than pitching and maybe a little bit of the hitting, what dosn't just take practice. I grew up playing soccer and basketball and to achieve in either of those you are going to really have to have natural skill in them. In football there is alot of skill needed for the majority of it. In hockey you need so much skill, in anything that can cross over to the olympics you need skill... Anyway I think you get my point.
