Anyone else have something like this. I have this burning/tight feeling in my traps. If I push my finger into them they both kinda ache? I have tried heat, ice, warm baths, and even those electricle things that make the muscle contract, those do help but it sees to come back a few days later. I have had X-rays on my back and everything looks fine. Anyone else have pain in this area or know what I can do about it? Thanks

I dont think a muscle tear would be on both traps though? There is no discoloration or anything like that. I have been dealing with this for about 2 months now and it is getting very frustrating. It seems to go away during workouts and such but the burning feeling usually come back about 4-5 hours later. I have tried taking off from the gym for about a week and nothing changed.Originally posted by beefcakeI've had that after a great dead lift workout, but it goes away after 3-4 days. Sounds like you got something else if it ain't going away. Would an xray show a muscle tear?

That's where I always get pain when I am stressed. I can remember my parents getting most of their back pain in the the trap/neck area. Take it easy and work on mellowing out and it should subside.Last edited by coffee-guy; 08-01-05, 11:31 AM.

Very possible. But i've heard stress related muscle pain is usually seen in the lower back. But you never know. Stress can do a lot of shit to the body. Wasn't there an article posted on this board about stress related symptoms and muscle aches?Originally posted by THE BOUNCERCould something like this be stress related? Stress can definitely cause trap/upper back pain because you involuntarily tighten those muscles. Possible remedies if this were the case are velarian root (natural muscle relaxant) or possibly chiropractic care. Good luck-back pain sucks!Originally posted by THE BOUNCERCould something like this be stress related? You don't always need to actually feel when an injury occurs in order to develope one. Some accumulate over time.
My recommendation would be to have a few sessions of massage. Go for an hour the first time, then 30 mins sessions until you feel better. The therapist will be able to give you an idea how many times you need to be there.

I agree with massage but make sure it's either deep tissue or if you're lucky enough to find an ART therapist then go with that.
Another thought is that it could be a bit of a problem with the disks in your neck, that won't really show up on a regular x-ray, you need an MRI for that.
Have you tried anti-inflamatories at all?

It sounds a lot like you started a slight tear in the traps through my upper-middle back. I had a similar experience a few years ago. For me, it was working the T-bar, although I didn't quite feel it at that moment. It started to hurt a little bit later and I worked through it and it got worse. I had to take a couple of weeks off and used some anti-inflammatories and eventually it healed.

Are you taking any statins for cholesterol control? If so, did your doctor check you creatine kinase levels?
Even if you are not taking statins, it may be worthwhile to measure your creatine levels since it is likely you have been supplementing with creatine for years.
In the absense of any of that, I'd go with the message session idea along with some antiinflammatories like Doans or Aleve. Like PI said, a minor muscle tear could cause those symptoms.

I have had something similar for a long time. A doctor told me is was just my nerves acting up. Happens with bodybuilders because there muscle are constantly changing. Kind of like an impingment on the nerves. He said it was nothing serious. Just kind of comes with the territory.
