You did everything you could to avoid the incident. If you hadn't been as vocal w/him, you would've had to destroy him, so a few words are much better than a few punches.

It reminds me of my dad...He always tries to do the right thing, but he ends up having to lay them out. A couple of years ago he was leaving a bar in a dark alley and two guys approached him and asked him if they could "hold a dollar". He told them "F YOU...get a job". Well, he layed the first one out and was holding the other one by the ear hitting him in the head when a cop rode by. The cop asked my dad what happened and asked him if he wanted to press charges. The other two guys were pissed because they were getting the hell beat out of them and my dad could press charges. Needless to say, he said no and went on about his business while the cop was going ahead and putting them in the car.

Many, many stories like that w/him, but I believe that is the only one that involved the cops other than the time our beach trip lasted only 4 hours due to fighting. Papa took names there too.

I use my sarcastic tone...something like "Get out my car before I back out. sit in front of his door and put my head on my hands and just tell him to take his time and that I am in no hurry." I find that a smile and sarcasm will get peoples goat more than words but it doesn't leave them room to escalate a situation because then it is totally their fault.

My g/f got into a situation recently that you would appreciate. Her great dane was ill, having to go into the vet daily for IV antibiotics for hours at a time. Well, she decides to leave and get a bit to eat and winds up getting into a confrentation with some rebel flag pick-up truck driving guy. She flips him the bird (her hand is in a splint with the middle finger stuck up anyway) and pisses him off. She pulls into a parking spot and he blocks her in by pulling his truck right up behind her car and gets out. He starts saying some shit and her Sicillian gets the best of her and she responds by kissing the air, saying c'mon, you want a piece of me? This girl is maybe 5'3" and maybe 125 but solid as a rock. The guy got back in his car and left. :D
