I heard two interesting things on the radio today.

1. The city of N.O. had busses to help get these people out in time. They were going up and down the streets offering rides using bullhorns to be heard. People did not fill the busses to try to get away from the storm even though there was a mandatory evacuation in progress.

2. The reason so many did not leave was because it was the end of the month and they were waiting for their welfare checks and food stamps to come in on the 1st of the month, otherwise they would have no cash or food.

Do you really think that there's an endless supply of this shit? Our refineries were operating at near full capacity to keep up with the current demand as it was before the hurricane. There isn't a problem with supply, it's delivering the product to consumers. That's not Bush's fault. What the fuck is Bush supposed to do about the current level of demand in this country? Give some practical suggestions instead of bitching about our president. If all else fails, blame the president and call people retarded.

Here's an interesting statistic: Of all the oil companies in the US, NONE of them had an increase in profits of less than 30% last quarter alone.

Conclusion: They are price gouging.

This is a perfect example of why petroleum products should be federally controlled. The entire economy depends on fuel prices. Groceries and retail products must be transported by truck to stores. Expect an immediate jump in price of 20% or more in all areas of retail simply due to the cost of diesel fuel. Heating oil will be no less than 30% more expensive this winter than last and last winter was a record year for people being unable to buy heating oil to heat their homes. The price of fuel affects every part of our economy and if these prices go on for a while, our economy will tank. Bush needs to institute federal controls on fuel prices NOW or the economic recovery will be history and he will hand the presidency to the democrats in 2008.

I don't disagree that something needs to be done. Build more refineries or something. Believe it or not, I’m just as upset as anyone over gas prices. It is indeed ridiculous that oil companies are still making money hand over fist while the rest of us are taking up the slack financially. If the cost of refining oil increases why should we bear all of that added cost, while oil companies maintain profit levels? That’s not what capitalism is supposed to be all about.

Like I said, our refineries were at full capacity already, it’s not like they’re able to take it up a notch and increase output. Our crude oil suppliers can’t just double their output overnight either. Americans are using more fossil fuels than ever and we just aren’t able to keep up with the demand. If your boss kept increasing your responsibilities but kept your wages the same, how would you feel? More work should mean more money. It’s not as simple as the government regulating the price of gas. It’s about keeping up with demand. And it’s not just the US that’s facing this problem. Other countries around the world are using much more oil than ever too. Crude oil suppliers have everything they can do to keep up with the demand. That’s not to say that oil companies aren’t gouging because they are. They’re taking unfair advantage of the situation and robbing us blind. We need to find a viable alternative fuel source. I mean, come on now, the internal combustion engine is outmoded technology at best. 60 to 70 percent of the energy from burning gasoline is wasted in today’s automobiles. And gas mileage today isn’t any better than it was 20 or 30 years ago. If we can send a man to the moon and talk to someone on the other side of the planet in real time, than we can develop either more efficient engines or alternative fuel sources. The oil industry has such a choke hold on the automobile industry that you can bet they’re not going to let that happen. Greedy bastards. If they were smart, the oil companies would be leading the search for alternative fuel sources and capitalize on them first. But no, making more money today than they can ever spend in their lifetime is more important. Because none of us really have anything significant that we want to do with our money and we don’t really need disposable income anyway…so please, take my money. No, really…I insist. Money is boring anyway. I’d much rather see you greedy bastards horde it all to yourselves.

i agree with you on this...and i agree with you on americans using less fuel... and finding other sources of energy... but the thing is these are all long term outcomes, none of this will have any effect in the near future, i will even go as far as to say the next 2 years... but what will have an imediate effect is the government doing something about it instead of just saying "The American people will just have to deal with it"... i mean WTF??? gas prices are going up but my wage and i guarentee your wage isnt going up with it

and somehow i dont see how the demand has skyrocketed in the past quarter to make the gas prices jump up 20-50 cents/gallon... and im gonna have to disagree with you on gas mileage from 20-30 years ago... i guarentee almost every new car (not truck or suv) with a V6 or 4 banger averages over 20 mi/gal... theres no way cars 20-30 yrs ago had even close to that good of mpg... fuck, my gf's new V6 altima can get 30 mpg on the highway
