  • My dilemma with Nextel. Warning it is a bit long.

I got my cell phone bill in the mail on the 30th and it’s for $500. So as anyone would do I call them up to find out what is wrong. They said that a phone I exchanged back on the 1st of July was water damaged and “damaged beyond repair”. So they submit a claim to billing for me and in turn billing denies it. I call up customer service and they tell me I have two options to have the charge taken off. I can either sign up for two more years or upgrade to a new phone and still have to sign up for two years. I originally signed up for a year in case something happened, such as this. Finding out that they were bought by Sprint also makes me want to leave them, but that’s a different story. So at this point I’m getting the run around. I call Blackberry (that’s the type of phone it is) because Nextel told me to talk to them, and Blackberry in turn tells me I have to deal with Nextel. This has been going on since Monday and I have gotten nowhere. I called again today and I finally got someone that would help me. He told me there was nothing he could do cause he can only do what they are told to do and that is pretty much just brush me off. So I asked who is his boss that I can talk to. He said there is no one there that is above him. Total bullshit. He then says I do have a fax number where you can write a letter to the customer service manager. I said well at least that’s a start and I thanked him for his help.

The phone that I turned in was new and not even a month old. I never had it anywhere near water or even exposed to rain.

At one point today when I spoke to someone she asked me why I wanted to leave and I said because Sprint bought you out. She said, “That’s not true no they didn’t”. I said so that means all those commercials I see and mailings I get are a lie? She said that I am with Nextel Partners and that Nextel Communications merged with Sprint. She also said that she has been with the company long enough that if there was any indication that Sprint was to buy them she would know. I didn’t believe her so I did a little research. I found an article on Yahoo that was taken from the Washington Business Journal that stated, “Nextel Partners, already 32% owned by Sprint Nextel, has argued that the Sprint acquisition of Nextel creates unfair competition.” It then goes on to say that Nextel Partners’ shareholders are trying to force Sprint to acquire them and that “Sprint Nextel has already indicated it will buy the 68% of Nextel Partners it doesn’t already own. So the bitch lied to me. That makes me even more pissed about the whole situation.

Sorry it’s so long but I wanted to get this out and see what others have to say or any options for me. Bouncer I know you have Nextel. What do you think?

Yeah they told me I wasn't compromising. I said well how am I not compromising when I am offering to send you my current phone back to make up the charge? I will be leaving them next month no matter what. I will sign up for two more years if I have to and pay the $200 to cancel the contract. That's half at least. This is my 4th time switching companies and next month will be my 5th. I'm switching to Verizon. I've never been with them, but my fiance is and she hasn't had one problem.

I have a Blackberry with Verizon and I bought insurance. About a year ago I was giving my son a bath and the damn thing fell out of my dress shirt breast pocket when I leaned over. That's exactly what I told the insurance company and it was no big deal. The lady on the phone said the number one damaging factor to phones is water (mainly dropping them in toilets LOL). I paid a $50 fee and had a new Blackberry the very next morning waiting in my office! The second time I lost my phone to water was when I went fishing off the coast of Corpus Cristi and got too drunk to know any better and jumped in the ocean with all my clothes on (and cell phone/car keys etc) and ruined it. I didn't have to pay anything that time and a new phone was waiting in my office Monday morning.

Go with Verizon - they will start carrying the new Blackberry (7100 series) in just a few weeks so look for it.

That's where I want to go. This time i'll probably get the insurance since I switch my phone alot. And I like the new 7100 series phones. They're alot smaller.

I have a nextel now but my contract runs out soon and I'm not really happy with thier service so I'm not gonna renew. Verizon is actually a pretty descent company form my experiance with them I'll probably go back to them...Sprint pulled that type of crap on me a couple years ago so I just paid to get out of the contract. I'd rather pay 200 to not have to deal with the people and find a better company.

I like my nextel actually. I have that National 1000 anytime for $55.00 a month. Never had a problem with them. I would just extend my contract for 2 years and get the $500 charge taken off.

I had way too many problems with Sprint and now it's starting again since they bought Nextel. I had problems with Cingular as well.

I'm probably gonna do that and then pay the $200 to get out of the contract if I don't get what I want out of corporate.

Here's the letter I wrote to them:

                  October 7, 2005

                  Nextel Corporate
                  1-888-566-2483
                  Attn. Customer Service Manager

                  Dear Sir or Madam:

I am currently a customer of Nextel. Recently I received my monthly statement with a charge for a phone that I returned to the store stating the phone was “damaged beyond repair” with a charge of $400.00. At that point I immediately called Nextel Customer Service.

Nextel Customer Service informed me, that a phone that I had exchanged for a new one was water damaged and could not be repaired. I then was told I had two options for the $400.00 charge to be dropped. The first option was to extend my contract for two years. The second option was to purchase an upgrade to a new phone and extend my contract for two years.

When I purchased the phone in question it was a new phone. It was purchased about the second week of June 2005. In the beginning there was an issue with a rattling noise coming from the phone. At that time I took the phone to the Nextel store where I was told that the rattling would not affect the normal functioning of the phone. Between then and July 1, 2005, the phone began dropping calls. I again took the phone to the store to notify them of this problem. The sales associate told me that they would exchange the phone for the $35 charge. The phone was functional in that calls could be made and received however, calls were dropping and the issue was worsening. The sales associate turned the phone on and off several times to verify the phone was in general working condition – even registering a signal. He also told me that there should not be any additional fees since it should be able to be repaired.

I am disputing Nextel’s diagnosis, charge and settlement options for the phone.

The replacement phone I have has to date, has not exhibited any of the problems that I had returned the original phone for. I am happy with the replacement phone and service Nextel has been providing me.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and I look forward to a timely response and resolution to this issue. I can be reached at ........

The blackberry is not bad at all. I will probably get another one. I like the fact that you do not need to use a stylus like on other PDA phones. It's set up so that you can do everything using your thumb. The only downside is the size of the 7200 and 7500 series. The new 7100 series is smaller and not so brick like like the one I have. I have the 7510. I would recommend one just on it's ease of use alone, but get one with Bluetooth so you don't have to hold it up to your ear.

I have the 7250 which has bluetooth etc. I love mine and everyone calls it my CrackBerry because I use it all the time. I use it for grocery lists and all sorts of shit - it's very convenient :D

Juice - I mainly grew up in Texas but I moved after high school. I still have family there though and try to go 7-8 times a year.

Timma I had to get an attorney to set nextell straight a couple years ago... They are not willing to negotiate anything really... A simple letter from an attorney will change they way they treat you... I canceled my service after my contract was over, kept my phone numbers I already had and they tried to charge me 500 too.. I ended up paying them 150
