I was trying to watch this but I had to stop. It just makes me so sick to see how pathetic these people are. Talking about it's not fair to expect them to quit a drug cold turkey.

I think it is hard for people to just quit cold turkey
some people are blessed with will power, some aren't....
when i had to start running i could barely breath the first couple nights after i jogged a lap, but i pushed myself a little bit further each night
when i cut out my sugar (which is obviously alot easier to cut out then a drug) i went from drinking about a gallon of tea a day to 2 glasses to 1 to none
then i discovered splenda and i usually drink about 2 glasses of tea a day with splenda the rest is just gulping down water all day long
i got a family member who is addicted to cocaine and has since somewhat been disowned from most of the family...myself and my grandparents still keep in touch with her to an extent tho, but she goes in and out of jail..so it's not easy
drugs fuck with your head, those drug addicts are not in the same state of mind as sober people, they don't rationalize

quiting drugs cold turkey is 100% will power, that's all it isOriginally posted by Curls4dGirlsDrug addiction has nothing to do with will power.
you can blame someone for using drugs in the first place, but you can't just expect them to quit when that drug CONTROLS them.....that's like expecting a drunk to quit drinking before he passes out, unless someone stops serving them they're not going to quit because they're not in a clear state of mind, they're controlled by the booze

Isn't that a little self-contradictory???Originally posted by Taylorquiting drugs cold turkey is 100% will power, that's all it is

no, because when someone first starts abusing drugs...say the first time they snort cocaine it is their own choice you can blame for doing something stupid
once they are controlled by the drug, addicted, reliant, etc...one they are no longer clear headed and sober...you can't expect them to have the strong will power to quit, or even the frame of mind to understand what they are doing to themselves
one decision is made with a clear mind, one is made with a altered drug infested state of mind

Drug addiction / alcoholism is a disease. Obviously, people do not chose to be addicts. Current research shows addictions to be both a physical allergy and a mental affliction. Addicts are addicts long before they pick up their first drug. So, saying that you can blame them for their first snort of cocaine because they are clear headed seems to make sense, but is not reality. Addicts / alcoholics are already searching for that high long before they try their first drug / drink. Think about it this way ... what sane person would think that trying cocaine is a good idea?
Shibs - saying an addict is pathetic is like saying a cancer patient is pathetic. Sad, yes. Pathetic, no. These people have a disease.

I'm saying it's pathetic that they trade one high for another and cop out by saying it's there way of trying to get clean. I had a bad problem with X back when I was 18 and 19. I decided to quite one day. I surely had relapses and it was very difficult. I did start drinking alot more, espeacially when I was having cravings. I guess you could say I was getting clean from X, but I developed an alcohol problem instead. I then had to battle with drinking and I guess you could say I traded that vice for bodybuilding. I still have to be careful when I drink, because I can easily get carried away. Those people should be straped down or put in straight jackets an expierence the withdrawl. Small price to pay to get sober.Originally posted by Curls4dGirlsShibs - saying an addict is pathetic is like saying a cancer patient is pathetic. Sad, yes. Pathetic, no. These people have a disease.

I think I took this the wrong way. I thought you meant that if you have will power you can quit drugs. Then you went on to say that the addictive qualities were too hard for some people to overcome. However, the more I read the first part I realized that you meant that the people who quit 100% cold turkey "must have" used all their willpower. The rest of the people who suffer the afflicition just can't do it without help.Originally posted by Taylorquiting drugs cold turkey is 100% will power, that's all it is

I have to agree. I came from a line of alcoholics and I fell into the trap easily EARLY on in life. It didnt' start with alcohol. My addictive personality started with sports, homework etc - anything that I could prove to be the best at. As I got older I fell into all of the bad things that the rest of my family before me had led me to. However, I somehow overcame it and redirected that negative energy to my family, work, my physique, yardwork - you name it - anything to stay away from that kind of negative shit.
I still find it hard to have balance in life though because of it. Example - I'll go weeks spending every single night with the family and then something snaps and I have to spend every single night in the garage with my motorcycle etc. I go on tangents and focus all of my time and energy on something while I may be neglecting other things. It's the same thing alcoholics/drug addicts do. I'm making a conscious effort to get better at it and I have to say that over the last few months (pretty much since I joined the board) I have almost mastered the walk :D.

Actually, this behavior is very common among alcoholics / addicts. It's called cross-addiction. You see, when you remove the substance from the body, that's all you have done. You have not cured the disease. Strapping someone down cleans out their system, but leaves you with what's called a "dry alcoholic" or a "clean addict." Alcoholism / addiction is a symptom. You have to treat the underlying causes.Originally posted by ShibbyI'm saying it's pathetic that they trade one high for another and cop out by saying it's there way of trying to get clean.
