When I lived in Missouri people used old cellars for things like that all of the time...

Things like that are pretty damn practical in that area of the U.S. If you don't mind me asking, what does somthing like that go for?

Ok, this one with instillation was 4k. It's a mid-hi range cost for one. They dug a hole, layed 1ft of concrete. Put the shelter in, then put more concrete 1ft think around all the other edges. Then Dirt on top of that.

At first look, I had claustrophobia shivers. But the case of wine would help fix that. Just have to make sure you don't forget to take a toilet can.

How many hours of air does it hold? Probably a stupid question since your only meant to be down there for the length of a single storm, but we don't have anything like them in Australia. And would it be silly to suggest that there would be people in America who go overboard on these things & build full on dug out shelters equipped to house them for several months?

If you look in that first picture, that little square on top is an air vent. The mesh screen was just put on to keep the bugs out daily. Yes there are people who go all out and put ones large enough to hold beds, have a water source, septic tank, kind of like an RV.
