  • how honest would you be?

I was at Team Universe this weekend, and one of my fiancée's fellow competitors (actually, they all have the same trainer) came and sat next to me after her 1-pc figure round. She asked me how she looked, and I began with "well I thought you looked good..." and she cut me off right away and said "be honest."

What that reminded me of is the frank, direct way competitors sometimes like to know how they did. Right then I realised she ceased being a girl sitting next to me, and instead became someone who, like me, was objectively describing her physique

My question is, if someone like this posted her (or his) pictures here, could you be as critical as she wanted me to be? Or would you say "wow, you look great!" or "nice job," and all that. The trick is, while she does look great (and did well), her placing could have been higher

    Any thoughts?

You did the right thing initially, overall she looked good, if she wants to place better, well thats something else, then you can talk more critically, i think you did the right thing

thanks, I appreciate that...I actually wasn't worried about hurting her feelings. My real, honest overall impression was that she looked good. If I thought she looked like crap I would have told her something like, "I think you looked a little out-of-your-league up there," or something. We've talked critically about her physique before, I just think a) she's more nitpicky than I am, and b) she does figure, and I still find the judging criteria a bit nebulous, though I've gotten better at figuring out who makes the first callout

If she is at a competition level and is asking for serious critism, people like Bouncer and RS would be able to give it to her straight. Others of us with less expierence in the field would tell her she looks great because she does, but don't know enough to give more critism than that.

              Sandwich technique: Positive, Critical, Positive.

To answer your question, if she asked for honesty, give it to her. It's easy to be honest without being rude.
