Let's see, you told Foghat he was wrong for his opinion on the cult talk being ignorant, then you say scientology is a bunch of wackos. So they are wackos and are a cult?
I simply said that it dosn't make much sense to say Foghat's opinion is wrong and that your opinion is right.

People use the word cult usually because it makes the topic they are discussing seem more deviant and "bad". I don't have a problem in people believing whatever they want to believe, pray to what/who ever they want. I do have a problem when a religion doesn't lay out all the facts for you on day 1. My knowledge on what Muslims believe is low, but I could read up on everything that the Muslim community believes in and even talk to a Muslim about the religion, I could do all of that for free. Scientology has nothing up front for you, they won't even tell you their basic beliefs until you are at a certain "level" as in you spent xx amount of money. That sends up a red flag to me when they aren't up front about their belief system.
I have a friend who got and is very involved with Scientology. When you first start going they start you off in a lot of self improvement classes, which I think that they probably help a lot of people with different problems. I have looked through a text book for one of the classes and it actually seems like a good idea. So, I don't think everything they are doing is terrible. Paying an extreme amount of money just to finally figure out what it is you "believe" in is ridiculous. Also, at first they tell you that you can be any religion and still practice Scientology, which is true until you learn the beliefs and then it basically goes against every other religion.
That is my .2 cents.
And I am sure many people would read the bible and think that a man being crucified and then rising from the dead is a wacko story, but the main thing being is that story is FREE. Not really a cult, more of just a self help school with a money scam going on the background.

My original statement, "that's just not true" wasn't intended to imply that Foghat's opinion of Tom Cruise or scientology is wrong and mine is right. I was saying that connecting Tom Cruise to cultism isn't ignorant. And the fact that I was the only one who mentioned the word "cult" in this particular thread, connecting it to Tom Cruise, would imply that my previous post was what he was refering to. He may not agree that scientology is a cult....that's fine....but it's not fine to imply that it's ignorant to think it is. The statement, "all this talk about 'cults' etc. really seems ignorant IMO..." would seem to imply that in his opinion, my reference to scientology being a cult is ignorant....well, it's not. I don't care if that's his opinion or not, ignorant is one thing I'm not. And yes, that particular opinion is wrong. Most opinions are just that, opinions, but opinions that include comments to the effect that someone else is ignorant are better left unsaid.Originally posted by ShibbyLet's see, you told Foghat he was wrong for his opinion on the cult talk being ignorant, then you say scientology is a bunch of wackos. No offense to Foghat.Last edited by babyblues; 08-25-06, 10:01 AM.

But with christians you don't have a set amount of money you have to spend, but you do give "offering" at church. It is also believed in most that the more you give the more prosperious (not specifed as monitary though) your life will be. Then there always seems to be some sort of "fund raiser" going on, to find another way for you to contribute money. These events are held and it's technically optional, but if you don't attend or at least give a donation on your behalf towards the "fund raiser", you will be precieved as less christian.Originally posted by Turbo3000People use the word cult usually because it makes the topic they are discussing seem more deviant and "bad". He's not blackballed from Hollywood by any means. Despite his extremely odd personallity he's a very good actor. And his wealth affords him the time and leisure of waiting for a preferrable one to come along or to not do any at all for that matter.

Paramount still has him signed to do some movies too so I don't know what they are gaining from just cutting his funding. Plus warner bro's is having him do some movies too. It really doesn't matter. I'll still go see his movies if they're good. He's not affected by this at all.
