Do you think the draft will come back and/or do you think it's a good idea? I'm just real curious to see what everyones view on this is.

Will the military draft be brought back?

I don't think the draft should be brought back, but on the same hand it doesn't seem that we can adequately sustain our military foothold when our military forces are being stretched thin.
Maybe if the draft was in place and the possiblity existed for 'higher society' youth to be sent to war then other options might be or would have been exhausted prior to declaring an act of war against another nation.

I don't think there should be a draft. I don't think we should have a military that is plauged by people who don't want to be there. It would cause more problems than it would help. I agree that we would think a lot harder about where we send our troops, if any one could be sent.

I think you're right about that. I know when I was in that there were a lot of times I had to convince myself that "I made the right choice." I couldn't really imagine trying to reason like that when I didn't make the decision to be there in the first place. And worst of all, dying for something you had absolutely no belief in to begin with.

I'm not saying it would be an easy thing to do or taxpayers would agree with it, but the pay bands need to be adjusted. Make it desirable for people of all races, intellectual & financial levels to join.
The military's big selling point is the GI Bill, but there is a good chance that a 17 or 18 year old kid that is choosing the military more than likely isn't concerned about going to college. On the other hand if a kid is concerned about getting money for college, how concerned are they really about being in the military? I joined the National Guard back in the day for the TAP & GI Bill. I thought the military side of it was neat & I wanted to learn more about it, but I didn't want to commit my entire life to it.
Another caveat to consider would be that these kids that join straight out of high school are young and impressionable. If a kid goes to college, he may change his major 3 or 4 times. The military tries to keep you pigeon holed in 1 MOS. Yes, people can change occupations, but it takes an act of Congress (exaggerating). Anyway, as soldiers learn more about the military, give them the option of learning a new speciality vs. just having them realize they're doing something they don't want to do and discharging when their time is up.
Also, instead of just having bands based on time & grade, add another element that factors in the desirability of that trade in the civilan world. You can't blame a pilot or nuclear engineer for leaving the military in order to triple or quadruple their salary. Yeah yeah, I know...a lot of times there is a reenlistment bonus, but that isn't the same as a steady paycheck or even a retirement that is based off of what you made.
I think I've seen someone else say it, maybe BLM, but it would be nice if somehow Basic Training was a requirement for all teenagers.

Why dish them off on other countries? Since we're the world police, we'd just deal with them in another country for another government. Instead, I wish we would just start executing a lot more people. Some people have it better off in prison than they do their own homes/towns, so spending time in prison isn't a reason to not do crimes.Originally posted by ShibbyI wish there was a way to send convicts over seas.

Since we are a nation of supposed "Equal Rights For All", if the draft were re-instated, would that include women? Seems only fair to me that females should be drafted also. I'm pretty sure that the Israeli's require ALL their citizens in a certain age range to do "National Service", (military), at one point or another during their life. So why not us? BB

On the surface it seems fair, but I see more negatives having them in vs. having them out. In a support role ok, but in a combat position or them even being near a battle field, I don't like it. One time when I was doing a 2 week training stint, I got 2 showers in 14 days while the damn women got one every day...talk about BS and an easy way to breed animosity.Originally posted by bonebreakerSince we are a nation of supposed "Equal Rights For All", if the draft were re-instated, would that include women? Also, I know some women are more capable than men, but when the going gets tough, I'd rather have a man beside me vs. having to be concerned about making sure a woman is keeping up. In tomorrow's US military (partially today), things like this won't be as much of an issue due to so much technology being used in battle, but ground troops will always be required to some extent.
Anyway, I'm sure I have an unpopular view on women in the military, but for the most part, I'd rather not have them around in a combat capacity, and I think that is where the greatest needs would be in a draft.

If a woman can meet the SAME requirements as the men, than sure, have at it. If they can make the grade I don't see any reason why women shouldn't be allowed in combat.Originally posted by bonebreakerSince we are a nation of supposed "Equal Rights For All", if the draft were re-instated, would that include women? I'm talking about maybe the non-violent offenders being used in the military, instead of just wasting away in jail. I'm sure that would make a lot of them think twice about the crimes they commit; if they know they will have to go into war. Also just like when criminals to work outside the prison with guards around, why not ship them somewhere to help rebuild the infratstructure, while being watch my MP's or someone trained to do it. But that also comes down to the same problems with the draft, having people there that don't want to be there.Originally posted by SonofBoneWhy dish them off on other countries? I don't know about that. Most men I know I wouldn't trust in the trenches. On the other hand, if you could get the enemy to call a woman the "B" word, or the "C" word, you'd probably be able to sit back and eat an MRI while she kicked some butt, lol.
Also, and somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Israeli women fight side by side with their male counterparts without any issues. Of course, I don't think you can compare the American female with the Israeli female. Most of the Israeli women have been in and around wars and such for a very long time, so it's part of their culture. Whereas American women, for the most part, only had to worry about who they hang out with and how they look. Apples to oranges I guess. BB
