I think a lot of folks are missing the point. If Imus had taken on a politician, a celebrity, basically a person of some power and standing, and ranted and raved about him/her in as obnoxious a manner as he wanted, he would have got away with it. He has been doing it for years.
The problem was - he picked on a group of defenseless college students who had done nothing to deserve his vituperation. As far as I can tell, they were fine upstanding citizens who have acted with total class during this whole sordid affair. It's like picking on a sixth-grader who had a meltdown in the national spelling bee and throwing vile epithets at him - it was appalling not so much because of what was said but because of the power mismatch. Imus was not taking on his equal, but someone he had no reason to pick on. I think that was the straw that finally broke the camel's back.
Now, I for one am not shedding any tears about his firing. If this brings back just a modicum of civility back into our public airwaves, then good riddance.
