I've called plenty of people nappy haired/headed before and I can honestly say not one of them was black. I'm from the NE and I've referred to people w/knotted up, dirty lookin, looking like you just got out of bed hair as nappy most of my life.

It's just like anything else you say, it's the tone, the intention and the audience it's aimed at.

People don't know how to deal with controversy. If someone accuses you of being racist the immediate reaction is to vigorously deny it and try to prove that it's not true. I think Imus shot himself in the foot here by making it look like he did something wrong. He should have just said something like, "Sure, it was racist, but it was meant to be funny." Context or no, a racist comment is a racist comment. Doesn't matter what, if any, context it comes from. If it's wrong in one context it's wrong in another or even without any context at all. Tell me that Al and Jesse have never said anything racist. They're just better at making it sound like it's coming from a "victim" of discrimination.

You know what, you're right. It is used to refer to black people. So what!? How many times do black comedians make racial comments directed toward white people? Now, how many white comedians do you see making those kinds of comments about black people? Even if there was a context to it, the guy would get hung out to dry as a racist. White comedians and white rappers would never get away with racial comments.

I'm just so tired of people looking for the slightest racial connotation in everything just to give them a reason to be outraged. Why don't they focus on fixing problems that do exist, instead of trying to create new ones and always crying about being a victim (as babyblues also stated). If Imus would have said that he meant it in the literal sense and that Rutgers just looked like a rough bunch it would be done with. He would just apologize for the vulgar attack, but the racism issue would be done. Just like when Billy Packer said a couple weeks "You always fag out on me". He stuck to his statement and said he meant it in the literal sense and will use the word again. He would not apologize. It was quickly forgotten about.
