  • Blood work.... Need advice

    Hello everybody,

Here’s the deal. I got switched to another doc cause of my new HMO. I recently felt something weird in my back from doing deads, so I scheduled an appointment, thinking I just needed to get referred to a chiropracter.

To make a long story short, since she’d never seen me before she wanted to do some blood work. I thought great. Everything I’d read on this board suggested it was something that I needed to start doing annually anyway, and I asked her while she was at it if she could check my testosterone levels, because me and the misses are going to start trying for a family soon and basically I just wanted to get a baseline,

I just got the results back yesterday and everything checked out fine except for the total test levels. She said I had a total testosterone level of 700, which was borderline low for someone of my age, 25. She said it was within the healthy range of 250 – 1700, but she wanted to give me a shot and have me come back in 6 weeks to check it again. Now I really don't think that I fit the bill of someone who has borderline low test levels, and in all the research I did I never saw a range as high as 1700. So what gives? Anybody heard of a range that broad? The highest I was able to find was 1200. Could she of interpreted the results wrong?

I really appreciate any advice on this because it's really weirding me out. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
    Thanks,

    Normal range is 250 ng/dL - 800 ng/dL

I don't know what numbers or scale she is using but something is wrong. Are you sure you are not misinterpreting what she said?

Nah man, I asked to see the numbers myself, I'm not a 100% sure on the bottom range number, I now think it might of been 270 but I know the top range said 1700. I asked her where she thought I should be at and she didn't say. She just told me she expected it to be higher and said we'll give you a shot and then check them again in 6 weeks? No further questions or anything. The whole thing didn't seem right?

no, nothing about that is right. a shot of what? test? if so, why would she give you a shot of test and then check it again in 6 weeks? Doesn't make sense on any level. 1700 is not a level referred to when looking at testosterone levels.

Normal levels of testosterone fall between 250 and 800 nanograms of testosterone per deciliter of blood.

The numbers you are referring to have nothing to do with the scale used in the measurements.

250 to 800 is exactly what the numbers should be - whatever she's talking about isn't accurate from everything I know...

I hope you didn't take the shot and you need to get a second opinion for sure....

i have a feeling that he misunderstood her. i just have a hard time believing that a doctor could make such a mistake and be so incompetent. smackerthebull, give that doc a call and ask her for the complete paper work from your blood work.

I would love to believe that but I went through 3 doctors before I stuck with one I trusted - 2 knew nothing about much of anything AAS related and the 1 that did wouldn't agree to monitoring me as he felt it was against his beliefs...

I really think med schools shy away from things like this just because they don't feel it's necessary to a typical practitioners scope of duties....

I appreciate the help guys. It was weird man, really weird. It was like she was there telling me that I had a problem one minute and next thing I knew a nurse was holding a needle to my ass. I know if I was a doc and some guy came in with supposedly borderline low test levels, who I already knew was into training, and was in good shape, I think I'd ask a few questions before jumping to the shot. The shot was of test. Although she didn't tell me that, I had to ask the nurse when she came in to give it to me.

I hope you didn't take the shot and you need to get a second opinion for sure....

Unfortunately, I did take the shot. At the time I believed her, and really did think I had a problem. Now, I think she might not know a damn thing. I'm going to wait till my next visit and if the results come back the same and she tries to give me another shot I'll turn her down and find another doc. I feel more informed now too, so I'll be able to ask better questions next time.

i have a feeling that he misunderstood her
You might be right, I should have done my own research before I walked in, but I didn't really expect that kind of result. I saw the results sheet and what she pointed to when I asked her what my levels where and what the healthy range was.

Total Testoterone Level: somewhere between 680 and 700 (couldn't quite
remember when I made the thread so I rounded up)

                  Healthy Range: 250 - 1700

and I specifically remember seeing that 1700 because I started running numbers in my head when I saw it and realized that if this were true, then my levels were really down. Which is why I agreed to the shot of test in the first place.

smackerthebull, give that doc a call and ask her for the complete paper work from your blood work.
I'll try to do this today, and If I can, I'll get the results posted in the next couple of days.

                  Thanks again.

ya, that 1700 number is very odd. 1700 nanograms of test per deciliter of blood would be expected in a heavily juiced individual. that number is not in anyway connected to measurements of testosterone. you need to get the hell away from that doctor bro. lol

I took a blood test before I EVER did anything anabolic and my "natural" level was something like 650 which was on the high side - after I came off one of my most recent cycles and had been off Test E for almost 15 weeks my test levels came back around the 800 mark - that 1700 number HAS to be something different bro - it just has to...

If they won't fax you a copy of your test results at least go by there and get a hard copy for yourself. BTW - how were the other parts of your test anyways (liver values etc?)....

Damn, I'm really glad yall are dismissing that 1700 number, it's putting my mind at ease. I agree bouncer. I'm not sure if this is the doc for me. I tried calling and got sent to an answering machine. If I don't get a hold of them before lunch I'm driving my ass up there and getting a copy.

BTW - how were the other parts of your test anyways (liver values etc?)....
All she said was everything looked great except for the total test levels. She actually said "All your numbers look good, but your testosterone seemed a little low for your age", so I assumed everything else was great.

That's another thing that didn't make sense. If my systems running great. Then why would my test levels be that low. I understand there's other factors that can affect test levels, but I eat clean, train hard, sleep well, and keep my stress fairly low. It just didn't add up. I'll get a copy and get the results posted as soon as I can.

                        I really appreciate the help.

You'll want that initial test before you decide to run anything etc - it will show you where you were at for EVERYTHING ("natural" liver values, cholesterol levels and so on)...

Yeah man, it makes sense to me that it's a good thing to do, but I don't plan on running anything anytime soon. The last thing I tried was a 1AD-4AD stack. I didn't like the way my body reacted to it so I stopped after 3 weeks. That was back in the summer of 2004. Since then I've been natural. I never got around to AS, though I highly considered it a few times. The more I read the more I felt that I should stop any thought of andro's and hold off on the AS until I was older. The main reason for the test was to get a baseline for the future, and a little bit of curiosity on my part.
