  • Laptop Computers.

Looking for a cheap laptop. I have had my current dell laptop for about 5 years now. Still works fine but it is starting to show signs of age.

All I do is use it for internet, email, ect. I dont need some powerful thing to play games ect.

Dell has one on their website that is like $500 with taxes and shit its like $550. Is that the cheapest I am going to find in a new laptop?

I personally think the new IBM Thinkpads have past the basic Dell...not sure about the cost difference, but it may be worth checking out.

my current processor is a celeron. lol. it has been fine for me for the past 5 years. i am sure any new computer i buy will be much faster. but just for the sake of arguing, i have seen some tests where some of the AMD's are better performing then the Pentium processors.

New Thinkpads are made by Lenovo (Chinese company) - IBM sold off their PC division to Lenovo. I would rather stick to HP or Dell.

I have what my company provides me, and as a company we switched from Dell to IBM. In comparing the computers I've had, the IBM IMO is a better machine...

They are good products. I know workplaces that use their high-end business models and they are excellent machines.

In terms of as cheap as possible. Black friday is coming up and I bet you can find an hp for like 300 after rebates.

The old IBM laptops were great. Little to no hardware compatibility problems and they will last forever. Dell has had tons of problems in the past, especially with service. They have gotten A LOT better in recent years though. I'd say all and all the best product these days is the cheapest. Theres no need to spend IBM money on a laptop if you're only using it to surf the internets and simple email.

Dell and HP are the best when it comes to price and reliability IMO. I had a Toshiba for about three years then the power supply/connection broke. They're just not built as stable as Dell or HP laptops. I just bought a dell last august and the damn thing is a beast. They're customer service has been top notch also. I thought about going with an HP but they're only offering Vista now, which means you can't purchase a laptop with XP installed on it from them, and I wasn't ready to switch from XP. I don't trust Vista yet. I don't think you're going to find anything cheaper than $500 anywhere. Just to let you know if you use any microsoft products like Word or Outlook, you're going to end up paying more than $500, unless you already have copies of these that you can install yourself.

                            thanks smacker.

i don't need things like word or outlook. just the basics.

i guess the cheap dell is going to be my best bet. i can always upgrade the memory for a quick performance jump. the cheap one from dell comes with 500mb i would upgrade it to 2gigs of memory from one of those memory stores online for cheap.

For those purposes B, you will be fine with a cheap Dell. I had issues with my Dell software and drives malfunctioning. It was a company wide problem, which is why we switched. If you are just using the internet and internet based email, any will work. I use mine for a lot more, which may be the problem.
