I understand what anti-semitism is. I've read several books written by survivors of Auschwitz and it makes me weep what these people went through. I get that.Originally posted by ScrumhalfEXACTLY.
The canard that Jews are somehow collectively responsible for some form of evil or another is what has driven anti-Semitism through the millenia. It led them to be persecuted in the dark ages, to the pogroms in eastern Europe and culminated in the Holocaust. Even today, we can't get past this - the notion that there is a Jewish conspiracy of some sort to control one thing or another today - whether it be media, the movies, or whatever.
Now exactly what did "THE JEWS" do to Gibson to merit this sentiment? I use the term in the collective sense deliberately - it is not one individual that somehow wronged Gibson and happened to be Jewish - it is "THE JEWS." It is precisely the sentiment that has driven anti-Semitism through the centuries.
There is a theme here - he comes from a family environment that espouses anti-Semitism, he makes a movie that is gratuitously violent and could be interpreted as encouraging the view that Jews killed Christ and now he has this tirade. I am all for second chances but when I connect the dots here, the picture of Gibson that emerges is not very flattering.
I think that this evidence is circumstantial at best. Again, his family's ideals don't condemn him. That is pure speculation. It's one thing to say that he's anti-semitic and identify his family as the cause, but quite another to say that his family's anti-semitism is proof that he espouses the same. The Passion of the Christ was actually very accurate. How people feel about history is not proof that the facts of history encourage anti-semitism. The Jews handed Jesus over to the Romans to be crucified. That is what happened. How is that controversial? The movie also portrays Judas as being a betrayor. Well, that's what happened. No one is saying the movie makes Christians look bad. There is no hidden agenda here, no one is trying to make Jews look bad. Finally, text is a poor communicator of body language. How do we know if he wasn't laughing while he was saying those things? Was it obvious by his body language and tone of voice that he was being sarcastic? Maybe mocking those who have been so critical of his movie? How do we know? I for one am not going to just make my judgement based on second hand information.Last edited by babyblues; 12-07-07, 12:41 PM.

I'm comparing it to the Biblical account. There are four different accounts in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. I've spoken to some friends who have seen the movie and they were just picking it apart. "Well, he didn't say this or that. This didn't happen that way." Whatever. Each of the writers of those four books had a different perspective on what happened. They wrote what they saw. In order to know everything, you'd have to compare stories from everyone who was there. The events portrayed in the movie and the order they are portrayed is accurate to the Biblical account. Unless the Bible is anti-semitic, which I'm pretty sure it isn't. :DOriginally posted by radoI think we could go and on about this and never come to a conclusion...Passion of the Christ was very accurate? Based on what BB? Some said it was not as accurate...But then again, everyone is going to have a different opinion on this...I've been around Jews for about 15yrs of my life and they're very good people...But then again in this day in age, being a Jew seems more of a status symbol or race rather than a religion:) Sort of like being a Catholic...
It seems now everything is racist. Everything from Black Friday to the Washington Redskins. It's getting ridiculous.

Yes it was. But there has never been anything in the Bible that has been disproven by archeology. There are many things in the Bible that have not been discovered by archeology, but archeology has never disproven people, places or events in the Bible.Originally posted by THE BOUNCERthe bible was written by humans just like the movie was. its like comparing the book Harry potter to the movie. :)
I have not read any of the Harry Potter books and have not seen any of the movies. So, for all I know, they're exactly the same. :D

my religion is in my head and i don't need a bible to know what i believe.Originally posted by radoI ask because every religion has some sort of a "bible"...So I guess you just contradicted yourself...Because if you have your own religion(whatever that is)...then you have your own bible...which in return; is made by man:)
