  • Went w/Mercedes not Audi

My girl has her eye on a 2004 Audi A4 1.8L Turbo FWD with 47k miles, fully loaded and the dealer is asking 14,500 for it. We have not had the opportunity to drive it or look it over very well yet, but we're planning on it tomorrow.

I don't have much experience or knowledge with imports or Audi for that matter and would like some pointers on what I should keep an eye out for. Things I should take into consideration, what I should try and get him down to...etc.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated....from anyone.

Audi's and VW's are one and the 1.8L is a turbo-charged motor...so having said that you need to put in Octane 93.

2nd note, Audi's and VW's were recalled because of their brake lights. Either the brake light would stay on after the brake was released, or it wouldn't come on at all when brakes were engaged.

Parts and labor will be expensive, simply because its Audi

My father used to have a '95 5000GT turbo Audi...man was it trouble, it constantly had electrical mal-functions and motor issues, the turbo kept f'ing up....

On the other hand, my uncle has a '02 VW Passat V6 5spd, loves it...it was however at 120K miles and needed a new Head Gasket, and constantly kept burning oil and coolant

My friend has a '03 VW GTI 20th anniversary, great care, no problems except for that recall

my other friend has a '03 Audi 1.8T and its modded, no problems when he had is stock and didn't give him issue's.....

basically with any car, keep up with maintance and you should be set...the only issue i have with Audi and VW is labor...mad money for repairs

Go ahead schdule a test drive and see how you like it...also check out some toyota's and honda/acura because i personally think they're more reliable...
    its your call though

Good luck, and keep us updated

The price is about right. I can't image one going for much more than that. When you go to drive it, make sure you mash down on the gas, or you'll see the horrible turbo lag that thing has. Here something about the car, like DNA said, it is a VW. VW isn't known for their extreme reliability, especially the electrical system. Audis are just as bad. The exceptions always make the rule in DNA's case. Keep that in mind.

Look all you have to do is go to Edmunds and read the reviews. People that had A4's and had problems rated the build quality highly. I mean, Audi drivers are just dumb. They are just as bad as BMW drivers. They all think their car is the jones. They're not. Audi's have tons of mechanical issues. I'm not trying to talk you out of this car, you just have to keep what I said in mind. You want to have to be willing to spend a few thousand over the lifetime you plan to keep the car.

There is nothing wrong with the A4, its nice. The Bose stereo especially. I forgo asking you why she wants the car.

Yea, then I searched through my purse for a tampon and cried.

Took it for a test drive....handled great, tight steering, solid suspension, nice braking...but when I was at the stop light and decided to "mash down" on the gas..tick, tock, tick, tock....terrible lag. I honeslty don't know if it was lag or throttle response, but either way it sucked. And it was noisy to the point it made me uneasy and overly cautious about it's reliability. So that's a no go on that one. Damn shame it was a gorgeous car.

nothing like mashing the gas and the engine screaming and you go nowhere. lmao

It was Turbo lag, I promise you that. The 1.8T is notorious for it.

I never had my mind set on it from the get go so I wasn't talked out of buying it. I kept what people said and what I read in mind and made my decision based on my test drive. I had no intentions of buying a car that didn't sound right and drive it back and forth to pennsyvlania.

I ended up buying a 99 Mercedes E320 w/80k miles, fully loaded, 1 owner, every receipt of service and absolute immaculate condition for $8k cash. She wanted something sporty but I wanted something comfortable and reliable to drive to pennsylvania (or wherever). The guy that had it was in his 60's and decided to give BMW a shot. I got all bases covered now: truck for beating around and taking the dog with me, bike for speed jones, and now my old mans luxury cruiser. :)
