Curious as to what you guys think about this. I am no physicists, so I haven't a clue.

I'm not smart enough to understand how dangerous these experiments are. It does however concern me that one of the scientists defending the experiments said something to the effect of, "there is LITTLE chance of creating earth eating black holes". Little chance wtf??? If there is any chance at all, those motherfuckers better stop!

I do believe that when human existance comes to an end, it will be because of our advanced technology. I just hope I'm gone before it happens.

Remember that humans are terrified of new technology, it literally scares the begeezus out of them.

Heard of the world is flat syndrome? aka if we sail too far we will fall off the earth?

Remember similar scares when we detonated the first nuclear bomb?

How about when we broke the sound barrier?



Granted we know very little about black holes, antimatter and even quantum physics in general... so how can we scientifically say that this experiment will be dangerous when it is an exploration into the very things we know little about, and most likely will garner a minute amount of comprehension into these most aliens of topics.

I say lets crank the puppy up and see what happens.

i would say that more research into the subject is definitely warranted. doubt anything would happen but knowing all you can about something potentially dangerous is not a bad thing.

Yep. I've been reading about it tonight. Basically they are creating matter that no one has ever seen and doesn't exist on earth. Seems a little dangerous. But so much money has gone into it, there is no way things will slow down now. I'm surprised its not a bigger story. I don't think they have the right to go through with such an experiment.

Even though the odds are low, the consequences of being wrong are infinite. That's why I don't believe they have the right to do it.

Basically, look at it like this. Imagine you were 99% sure of something. Imagine someone offered you a bet on a football game between a high school team and an NFL team. Obviously this is a "sure thing". (If there is such a thing) The wager is, if the NFL team wins, you get $1000. If the high school team wins, you die. I know I wouldn't take that bet...

A black hole, something we know nothing about, is different than a thermal reaction in the atmosphere. Mainly because you would have a chance to live through the latter and not the former. To me, its scary that they feel they can do it without the consent of the global community.

Its not that the consequences are so great it is that they were going to do it without the reaction of the people those consequences would effect. Seems like the same thing a tyrannical mad scientist would do.

You don't know the boundaries until you test them or pass them and relaize you've gone to far. I'm all far testing the limits....

I have to agree. We push ourselves every day in the gym. There is a chance we could tear a muscle, rupture a tendon. There is even a chance, though minute, that exercise could trigger a heart attack. We don't think about it, because we have goals.

there is a difference between pushing ourselves and making uneducated decisions.

i am not saying we shouldn't experiment and try etc.. i am simply saying that when it comes to something as big as this, knowledge is power. wouldn't hurt to take a year and learn a bit more about the potential risks etc..

I doubt they would discover anything different then they have in the last decade of building it and the decades of research prior to its construction approval.

People are acting like this is a simple task that was carried out over night with out any forethought.
