  • Thinking about buying a scooter/moped.

I have a math challenge for everyone out there. We are moving out of our apartment into a house that we are renting. We are getting a great deal on the house and it is sitting on a few acres. Problem is, it is about 15 miles further from where we work. Depending on which GNC they have me working at, I may be driving 50 miles round trip to go to gym/work. (I'll go to both while I am out.)

Here is my question. I'm thinking about purchasing a motorized scooter or something to go along with my car. Assuming the scooter gets 80mpg, and my car gets 24mpg. (Also remember I put mid grade in my car, and would put regular in the scooter. So thats 10 cents more) How long would it take to break even assuming I spend 1K on the scooter?

(Also remember I will save extra money in the long run when I sell my car a few years from now, as it will not depreciate as much due to lower miles. No need to factor that in, just another advantage.)

well that depends on how much you would be driving the scooter as opposed to the car. if you were to drive only the scooter you would probably have that 1k back in a year or so.

Good point. I'd probably take the scooter 4 days out of the week. Just thought of something too. When I start working at UPS's corporate office, I might not want to be rolling up in a business suit on a scooter every day.

I did a lot of research on scooters a while bike when I was looking at getting one (still haven't bought anything). Realistically you should look at spending 3-4k on getting anything worth getting. If you go cheaper you will either be maintaining it or it will be very underpowered. Straight gas, it would take about 2 years to break even. You will also have insurance, and since rain/snow seasons are coming up you won't be using your scooter near as much as you would probably think.

i think the gayness of it is the biggest reason for holding off on it. :)

That is the other delima I had. If I was going to spend 4k on a great scooter, I could get a decent used bike.
