    This shit is freaky;

    Scientists hope for surprises in Big Bang experiment | Reuters

    GENEVA (Reuters) - Scientists involved in a historic "Big Bang" experiment to begin this week hope it will turn up many surprises about the universe and its origins -- but reject suggestions it will bring the end of the world.

    We have another thread discussing this :)

            OK well no one died, no black hole, other than Bouncers thought process when it comes to tact:P

            Quite boring then after all

              Even if scientists say they are confident that switching on the LHC won't bring the world to a sudden end, some of them are hoping to find evidence of dimensions in excess of the four we are currently aware of. Because the LHC is the most powerful and most precise particle accelerator ever built, many see it as the best opportunity yet to find proof for the veracity of "string theory."

              String theory is a mathematical construct that many believe might explain away inconsistencies between Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and quantum mechanics—a major focus in theoretical physics for much of the last century. The highly complex models used in string theory point to the possible existence of up to 11 dimensions and also make predictions about the existence of some as-yet unobserved sub-atomic particles. Should the LHC be able to find some of those particles, a much touted theory of physics would have its first kernel of proof.

              But string theory is just one idea being investigated by the thousands of scientists from more than 80 countries who will be running, analyzing and evaluating the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. Many also hope to find the elusive "Higgs boson," a theoretical particle named after the Scottish physicist Peter Higgs. He came up with a theory in 1964 to help explain what gives mass to matter, thus making the universe possible. Higgs pointed to a particle that has so far never been observed. By creating conditions similar to those that existed at the birth of our universe, the so-called "Big Bang," scientists hope to be able to find Higgs boson, also known as the "God Particle."

              :wacko:

                  So you're doing a self analysis?

                    If they did create a black hole, they wouldnt know about it for years. Thats the scariest part IMO. Its not a situation where as soon as they do an experiment they can say "ha no black hole!". Because there is no way of knowing if they created one or not, because of its initial size.

                        It would be nice to have empirical evidence to throw at you bible thumpers in terms of the creation of life. Apart from the bloody rib from Adam of course, lol....or sucked into the event horizon...either way...

                          Today they just tested the machine. The real tests haven't even started yet. One article said it will be weeks before they can even have the possibility of significant information. It also said it will be at least a year before the thing is up to full power.

                            I'll take Bouncer's comment with a grain of salt, but is this one directed towards me as well? If so, when did I say anything about religion in this particular post? And when did I say a thing about my personal beliefs in any other post? If your post was just generally out there, then I apologize.

                            All I am saying is, there are scientists out there, who are much smarter than you, me, or anyone else on this site who believe that creating this type of power in such a concentrated area could create a black hole. Hell, most of the guys who are worried about black holes are probably atheists. So I don't see how you are making this a religious thing at all.
