    Facts came out that Toyota workers earn an average wage of over $30 an hour while UAW workers earn an average wage of $28. And the american car companies would never had made all those "gas guzzlers" if that wasn't what the market wanted!

      you cant see the forest for the trees bro. if you honestly cannot admit that the American car companies are mostly to blame for their own situation because of so many past mistakes and how the company is run than your opinion is just irrelevant.

      the unions are what makes it impossible for them to compete with the foreign car companies. from a business standpoint, the american car companies have to rebuild from the ground up.

        Bush throws lifeline to auto industry

        WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush announced $17.4 billion in emergency loans to faltering U.S. carmakers on Friday in a dramatic step to guard the industry from imminent collapse and save hundreds of thousands of jobs from falling victim to a deep recession.

        Bush, seeking to bolster his legacy and bucking some fellow Republicans who would prefer the car industry work out its problems without government aid, said it would be irresponsible in a time of economic crisis to let carmakers die.

          This is total BS. The reason we can't compete as well is that foreign car companies are allowed to import as many cars as they want while we have major restrictions and tariffs on what we can export to their country. We could work for free and not be able to compete with that. This is similar to the steel industry. Japan subsidized their companies to sell steel below cost, how could our companies here compete with below cost?

            i have never heard the import side of the argument. maybe something should be done to stop that advantage they have.

              DALLAS (Reuters) - In 1953, then General Motors president Charles E. Wilson said, "For years I thought what was good for our country was good for General Motors and vice versa. The difference did not exist."

              That statement was quickly boiled down to the arrogant- sounding but inaccurate quotation, "What's good for General Motors is good for America."

              Those days seemed very far away on Friday as the U.S. government announced it would offer up to $17.4 billion in loans to prevent U.S. automakers from going bankrupt.

                      I have say I would have agreed with you 2 or 3 years ago B. But, now I strongly disagree. I have worked for Delphi Electronics (GM Spin off) for 2.5 years now. In order to get a job there I had to join the UAW and pay them two hours pay every month. I am no fan of the UAW they are a corrupt organization. Gedelfinger (UAW President) is an idiot and a crook. JMO.
                      I can tell you right now if the UAW was dissolved at Delphi the place would still collapse and the same for GM. The management is clueless as how to run a business. I constantly see them doing things that are clearly designed to lose money. Middle mangers sugar coat everything to cover their incompetence and upper management is only interested in giving themselves a bonus. Everyone in my department has submitted suggestions to cut cost and save millions of dollars for the company and they are ignored. The boards of GM and the other auto makers need to fire the CEOs who are only trying to get theirs at the company's expense and could care less about the product. The CEOs need to fire all the incompetent management that covers up the real problems. The union needs to be able to dump worthless members and lose the socialist attitude.

                      One more thing I am not a production worker I am in Skilled Trades. But, the production workers at Delphi, GM and Chrysler all work under a 2 tier wage agreement. What that means is that any one hired after a date a couple of years ago makes about half of what the old guys made. SO at Delphi production used to make $28 per hr the most they can make now is $18 per hour and they make IC chips and assemble circuit boards. Not "monkey work"Also there is no pension or great health care package. I have 80/20 insurance with a $2000 per person deductible that never covers any office visit. There is no eye or dental plan. Variations of this system are in place at both GM and Chrysler. I live near a Toyota/ Isuzu plant my friend has worked there for 8 years now. He makes $28 per hr as a production worker he started there at $21 per hr. He has Excellent heath care benefits he pays a co-pay only and has eye and dental coverage.

                      I hope you are starting to get the picture here. The problem with the Big 3 has very little to do with their work force being unionized. In fact there are many Japanese and German UAW factorys in the US.

                      The real problem is the Big Business Culture and correcting that will require a new style of management with the balls to do the right thing all the time.

                        Financially strained consumers remain reluctant to purchase a big-ticket item such as a car at a time of massive job cuts and the near-absence of vehicle financing.
