  • US sea capt. freed from pirates in swift firefight

About time we do something right!

MOMBASA, Kenya – U.S. Navy snipers opened fire and killed three pirates holding an American captain at gunpoint, delivering the skipper unharmed and ending a five-day high-seas hostage drama on Easter Sunday.

Capt. Richard Phillips was in "imminent danger" of being killed before snipers shot the pirates in an operation authorized by President Barack Obama, Vice Adm. Bill Gortney said.

He said the pirates were armed with AK-47s and small-caliber pistols and were pointing the rifles at the captain when the commander of the nearby USS Bainbridge gave the order to open fire

So it was a sniper shot from boat to boat? That sounds pretty difficult... is it?

I would think adding the equation of the water movement would make the shot extremely more difficult. Snipers are cool as shit.

All snipers keep a log of every shot fired in training and actual callouts. Everything from wind speed and precipitation to angle, distance and load info is recorded. For a shot like that the difficulty would increase by a factor of ten.

I agree. I always said if I had to go to the military or something I would try and be a sniper. Don't know much about it, it just seems really cool.

Plenty of rifle ranges, shooting groups and competitions around the country.

No reason why you can't get into shooting as a sport or hobby if it really interests you.

I have went and shot rifles. The instructor said I did really good for not having experience. This was like 15 years ago. Didn't pay for, just had a friend that hooked me up. So the guy could have just been being nice too. There are other hobbies that interest me more though. If I were to get into something similar it would be archery. Other than that my hobby interests are more like basketball or learn golf.

He was probably being honest. The basics of marksmanship are simple. If you apply them exactly as they are taught hitting a still target accurately isn't difficult. People who have no experience with firing a weapon that are open to instruction usually do very well because they don't have any bad habits to break. A lot of women out shoot men in basic training because of this; they don't have any bad habits and they don't have the macho attitude getting in the way.

Im not impressed. It was like a 40 yard shot. They have a gyro tripod, not sure what the actaully name is, but it keeps the weapon from moving up and down with the rocking of the ship. Like on tanks they can stay locked on a target while the tank is driving over rough terrain. And as far as getting three shots off about the same time isnt a big deal. Dont get me wrong Im glad they got that guy back safe and sound but people are making this out to be something its not.

Well maybe a well trained killer like yourself could pull it off with ease, but the average soldier let alone civilian could not. Therefore, imo, it is still pretty impressive.
