Critical thinking class?Originally posted by dbjmofo View Postmy professor used religion in class today. he said that "arguing for religion is the PRIME example of the wishful thinking fallacy. people will believe that what they think is true because they WANT it to be true. wishful thinking is the strongest and most commonly used fallacy because it leads it's arguers to yet other fallacies, fallacies which include denying the counter-evidence and ignoring the counter-evidence. ironically, the only way to avoid this type of fallacious argument is to play Devil's Advocate."
so i wrote in my notes "all religions are fallacious".
sorry, i felt like we needed to bring up the board's IQ a little.

great the assumption will be it means christian God, remember how your country got built Shibbs and how you enjoy the freedom and rights you have today before you try destroying the country's heritage.Originally posted by Shibby View PostAtheist ads to adorn New York subway stations - CNN.com
I like the simple message. Just saying we are out there, we live good lives and we are here to talk.

your proffessor sounds like a typical non achiever, lacks drive, lacks personality, so decided to get a phd and now spends time trying to influence the downfall of everyone elses value system out of spite because the proffessors life didn't turn out how they wanted:disagree:Originally posted by dbjmofo View Postmy professor used religion in class today. he said that "arguing for religion is the PRIME example of the wishful thinking fallacy. people will believe that what they think is true because they WANT it to be true. wishful thinking is the strongest and most commonly used fallacy because it leads it's arguers to yet other fallacies, fallacies which include denying the counter-evidence and ignoring the counter-evidence. ironically, the only way to avoid this type of fallacious argument is to play Devil's Advocate."

Tell me why you feel so threatened by non-believers and how my non-belief destroys the history of my country.Originally posted by Mr incredible View Postgreat the assumption will be it means christian God, remember how your country got built Shibbs and how you enjoy the freedom and rights you have today before you try destroying the country's heritage.

he's actually christian. wears a cross apparently.Originally posted by Mr incredible View Postyour proffessor sounds like a typical non achiever, lacks drive, lacks personality, so decided to get a phd and now spends time trying to influence the downfall of everyone elses value system out of spite because the proffessors life didn't turn out how they wanted:disagree:
but you have to really understand that he's speaking from a strict, logical sense. in this class, all we do is take what other people say and pick it apart and find the fallacious part of the argument. it's definitely a class i would recommend to people if it were structured differently.
there is even a class on my campus taught by a deacon (or ex-deacon?) and he picks apart every major religion. you have to sign a waiver to take the class because he's basically denouncing all religions and explaining why, and you know that religions gets some people heated.
