Well we are talking about skin pigmentation and the type of melanin present in different races. You raised the question of the different skin color even though people aren't really that far apart. I can't really get to in deep about recessive and dominant genes, but it leads back to that. Even though races may be relatively close, the environment is not. What genetic characteristics were stimulated versus which ones lie dormant is about nature and nurture.

1) the oldest human remains have been found in Africa, I think I heard.

But land used to be more connected and sea levels lower in parts which along with volcanic activity and earth plate movement generally means that there are more islands now than before and more isolated if it wasn't for boats, planes etc.

2)Notwithstanding that deeper digging might find bones in England or wherever, does that mean the first people found were African ?

i dont believe its a simple factor of the sun making you very dark. why are the native tribes in south america that get the same amount of sun more brown in color then black like you get in africa?

I think originally, it WAS all about your environment, where you lived in relation to the equator, etc. Not so much anymore, we've adapted and have every color living everywhere. If people originated in Africa, then yes, they were darker - but as they migrated, they lost color.
