I would just find a Macbook on eBay that is not the latest generation and get it for cheaper.

If I was looking for a laptop for my mom, and all she does is basically internet and email, and she wanted a Mac, I would look for an older 15" Powerbook, those are built to last.

Hah, I never saw the word iMac. Sorry.

I have the first generation of iMac when they switched to intel chips, it has a plastic back, the newer generations have aluminum backs. I would check craigslist for a 20" iMac with intel chipset. You should be able to pick one up for $400-600 I would assume.
