I don't know a damn thing about which are good - which blow easy - anything.. Any of you guys have recommendations for an SUV - main concern is blowing the damn things and having to buy them all over again. Was thinking 2 12s - so if anyone can go off of that I would appreciate it.

Well, make sure your amp has proper air circulation. Your amp will heat up like a bitch no matter what. Some of the newer models have to blow off the heat. However, if your amp isn't getting enough air, it will heat and cause fire.
2 12" subs is powerful, if you want to go down that road make sure you have 2 monoamps. Plus you'll need wiring and all that jazz. It will cost you a good bit of money.
If you do it right, you can get away with 1 10" sub. Its enough to rumble your balls. Its all about amp bro. A strong 10" sub will require close to 500 RMS at 4 ohms or 2 ohms amp.

JL Audio 12W7 Subwoofers - Car Audio SubwoofersOriginally posted by the art of war View PostI don't know a damn thing about which are good - which blow easy - anything.. They also make a 13" These things will take all the power you can throw at them and will blow your windows out of your car.
Key is make or have someone make a proper box and as DNA said you have to have the right amp to power them. JL audio also has amps but if you wanted you could spend 10K on a amp. JL will do IMO

Aright homie I'm here to rescue you. since we have the same car I'll guide you through your stereo install. First you don't need two twelve inch subs, because ML itself is a big old bass box one 12" sub is all you need.( plus it take less cargo space)
Two: get any doubledin stereo you want, it'll fit right in. I have kenwood ddx 512 with garmin GPS(which is couple of years old but I love it) and some chepo brand amp which has been in duty for the last a few cars I had to run the amp.
now here is the tricky part...you have to find a reputable stereo shop to install all that shit because your ML doesn't have the usual copper weiring, It's all fiber optics but they do sell the installation kit for it so it's not a big deal to install.
Three: you have a factory bose sub and amp under your seat. Amp has to be removed because you can not use it with your head unit(this also makes your sub under your seat useless. Now here is one thing I didn't do, Everyone recommends that you should also swap your bose speakers because they have a different ohm rating from the head unit you'll be purchasing so they say get different speakers and a four channel amp to run your speakers but I found that factory speakers works just fine with the headunit's build in amp and when you add the sub and amp to drive your base it is plenty of loud.
This is the ddx series kenwood I have in my ML.Last edited by wnabeabeast; 09-26-10, 10:40 PM.

Thank you! :) at the time this was the only unit out there with all the features I wanted in a doubledin stereo(I'm sure they all have it now) but this was the only one that you can perfectly match the lights o the stereo with your dash lights, and it was the only one that synced the brightness of the screen with your headlights(like when you turn on the headlight s screen goes slightly dimmer so it won't blind you during nite time driving( I returned a Jensen for that reason) you can control your iPod and iPhone( iPhone with an optional around $150 parrot phone kit) so you can control the iPod fro. The screen plus Bluetooth syncs with your phone so your contactsshows on the screen plus it does voice dial, and you have the option to black out the screen if you are driving and you wanna play a DVD while you are driving. And I forgot to add it also charges your phone while you are playing your iPod. And it has tons of other features like gps, xm and sirius with xm you get the live traffic updates and shit, backup camera, inputs for rear screens if you wanna install couple of them to back of headrests for the rear passengers and some other shit that I can't remember.Originally posted by dna9488 View PostNice headunit wna. Love the double decker with GPS
And here is the best part...you can pick one up for around $500 and you'll have the complete stereo.

haha yup. My buddy has a clarion headunit just like that installed in his '06 VW Toureg. He likes the voice Garmin navigation. I checked them out at crutchfield, but they don't fit my Jetta. I have a double decker, but those headunits are too long and I don't have room behind my stereo. Fuckin blows too, I really would have enjoyed having one in :(

Are you sure about your jetta? Because my girl has an 06 Audi a4 and it didn't come with factory nav and shit so I got her the exact same kenwood for her car last Christmas and it fits perfectly.Originally posted by dna9488 View Posthaha yup. i have a '01 Jetta. The '06+ Jetta and GTI's have the extra room for the larger headunits. The A4 no doubt about it. She must love it.Originally posted by wnabeabeast View PostAre you sure about your jetta?
