If Tahoe intrigues you and you really want to visit I would suggest;

Fly in San Francisco, spend at least one night there, preferably two. There is a lot to do in that area depending on what you guys like. Get a rental car and drive through Napa (best wine in the world imo) spending the better part of the day 3 in Napa. It will be romantic for you and your bf. Drive from Napa to Lake Tahoe, plan on staying there a couple of nights. On day 5 drive to Sacramento airport and fly out.

Spring time would be optimal for Napa. Anytime is good for SF/Tahoe.
