I think it is a very legitimate concern. Most people I know use a DSLR like a point and shoot camera. They put it on Auto mode and fire away. There's no point in buying a DSLR to do that.Originally posted by FitnessBrat View PostI'm scared! I'm scared I won't learn how to use it to it's capabilities, so it won't be worth the money. :panic:
In my mind, there are two things you need to think about.
Firstly, a DSLR gives you a lot more options for you to decide when taking a shot. In a P&S,the camera makes all the decisions for you. If light is perfect and everything is ideal, great. Otherwise, there is no way the camera will make the right decision. That's why indoor shots, night shots and backlit shots look like crap when taken by most people with P&S cameras. The issue of course is that there is a learning curve for using a DSLR. You've got to put in the time to learn it. It is not complicated, but it takes time to experiment.
Secondly, a DSLR is bulky. No two ways about it. You are not going to slip it into a purse and carry it whereever you go. You need to get a camera bag or backpack to carry it around. This is a dealbreaker to many people and the DSLR languishes in the closet at home. P&S are super convenient, there's no question about it. If there was a P&S that have the versatility of my DSLR, I'd get it in an instant.
It doesn't matter what Beast or I tell you. You need to think through these two things before jumping in. Based on your comment, I think you are.

Ehh, I just got a waterproof camera over the summer. Maybe I just need a nicer regular camera.
