    It's funny you should mention the Shield, I have been T&Eing one for about two months now, primarily as a smaller, thinner, compact for lighter clothing situations. It has handled very reliably, but its durability is in question as it is in a first production run and has already had a model wide recall for a potentially significant issue regarding a pin in the trigger.

    However, for a slimline subcompact 9mm, its not a bad gun at all. Feeds well, recoil is manageable, way thin for concealed carry. I think that once they iron out the kinks it could be a very plausible concealed carry pistol. The price point is spot on as well.

However, you asked a specific question, and I think the more up front information you have the better you will be able to make an informed decision.

            I carry a firearm for a living. I have for twenty plus years. I have utilized, instructed, T&E'd, and put thousands of rounds downrange. I have used firearms in my line of work, both rifles and pistols, and have seen definitively what ammunition can do to the human body. I write that paragraph not out of bravado but merely so you will understand why I have the opinion I do.

            I carry a Glock 19, with Hydroshock ammunition. I carry a Glock because quite simply its the best combat pistol out of the box in the world. Yes, you can super duper tune an 1911 and have a great gun, but Glocks simply don't fail. You can buy a Gucci H&K pistol, and its a good pistol, but its 2k and no better than a Glock, I think a Glock is better actually. I carry 9mm ammo because it is not the size of the round that determines stopping your attacker..it is shot placement. That is a definitive truth. Where you put your bullet determines outcome far more than the size of the round.

            Additionally, I feel that I am better in a gunfight then 95% of the people on the planet and my training reflects such. Gunfighting is a perishable skill. If you decide to carry a pistol, make the decision to train with it. If not when the shit hits the fan you get killed, and maybe someone you love also.

            XD's while being a good pistol have reliability issues...currently they are being recalled. Glocks have been around since the 1980's and I believe had one recall for the EAA thru EZZ series of pistols in 1992.(Actually there have been three performance based, the last in 02) The rail slide was weak and they replaced the frame of the pistol. I have carried a Glock in every environment you can think of, shot it in the same, and I have never had a Glock pistol malfunction because of the pistol. Shitty ammo yes, the pistol itself no. In my opinion you would be hard pressed to find a more reliable, dependable combat pistol out there. I'm NOT saying that there aren't some cool and good pistols out there, there are. I love Kahr compacts. But my daily carry is my Glock 19. I carry it at work, and I carry it at home, and I train with it. You fight how you train. Hope that helps.

            IMHO:)

            I think you may have me convinced to buy a Glock 9mm. I haven't been reading as much on the Glocks as I have been on the XDs. Great info man, really appreciate it. Lots of knowledge on this board.

              funniirishman, you prefer the Glock 19 over the Glock 26 for concealed carry?

                  I have carried both and notice no difference. People will buy the 26 and put a grip extension on it, they don't realize they just made it the length of a 19. I sold my 26, now have the 19. I like the 19 much more.

                    Are all glock sights & grips the same? My brother has the G21 but I don't have access to a 9mm.

                      Grip angle is the same. Some people make a big deal out of it. It doesn't bother me. I can transition from my sig to glock without much adjustment or fuss.

                        Thanks for all the input guys!

                        Last question. What grain and type of ammunition do you use for protection? What about target shooting?

                          I use 115 grain either way, but switch between a full metal jacket for practice to a critical defense for concealed carry. I want a bullet that will penetrate, mushroom, and stop as opposed to a through and through with a fmj.

                              I do prefer a model 19. The 26 is definitely smaller, so if thats a major consideration for you definitely take a look at a 26. I haven't been anywhere that I could carry a 26 I couldn't carry a 19 and I prefer a full grip in my hand. A 26 is about an inch shorter, and more importantly your looking at LESS than an inch in height between the two (19 is 4.99 inches 26 is 4.17) And they are the same exact width, the 26 is one oz lighter than the 19 unloaded, and about 4 oz heavier loaded, but you have 5 more rounds. So for less than and inch your giving up 5 rounds of ammunition, and sacrificing a modified grip on your pistol. To me its no bueno, but that's just an opinion. You can get extensions on the mags but then you might as well be carrying a 19.

                              To address the Glocks sight picture, yes if you have shot a Sig or an HK or a S&W then the sight picture is going to be different...its flat and not as high as say a Sig, or and HK. It can cause some confusion for some folks..mostly knuckle draggers;) (just kidding Rocket) but as many things using it equates to proficiency.

                              One thing to consider that some people can't get around is that the Glock has no external safety. For me this has never been an issue, it has three internal safety mechanisms that make sure the gun can't be fired unless you pull the trigger. But some people panic with kids and such. For me I have positive control of my pistol and my kids have been educated never to touch them. But to each their own, in the interest of full disclosure that is a big difference with the Glock and alot of other pistols.

                              I'll touch on ammunition real briefly. Lots of flavors out there. I would say to carry an expanding round...Rangers, Hydroshock, Critical Defense come to mind. I actually am digging that last one but haven't evaluated it fully yet. Essentially used a core that ensures expansion of your round. Make sure you take time to train with some of your carry ammo so you know how it will shoot when you need it. It will shoot differently then your target ammo, sometimes very much so. As always, this is all one guys opinion. Hope it helps..stay :ninja:

                                always educated write ups funnirishman

                                I have shot the
                                g26 = ok
                                g19 = shitty
                                g17 = ok
                                g21 = ok

                                now I am talking target shooting where I can not have bigger than 3" groups not a speed type shooting where the whole center mass counts.. the g19 i only put maybe 20 rounds down range as it was mostly for my big kid to she what she shot better she also shoot like shit with the 19 and decided on the 17 I think we both like heavy guns cuz she kills it with my wilson combat.
                                her G17 is at glockworx right now getting full pimped out and as soon as softball is over and she can come home on weekends i am getting her some real training and prob compete at small local type stuff.

                                no idea why I am rambling but no matter what we type I say if it is your goto gun that might save your life go shoot them all at a range that rents them or with buddys guns. you will see what gun fits you best pretty quick
                                sure you can learn to shoot any but shooting aint as easy as it is on TV so a head start would be huge.
